Is it Normal for ARO's to jump this Much???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't get a pleco, they just sit still. A flag tail or a silver dollar which will swim are good. Parrot fish will get territorial and may make him more jumpy.

seriously when aros are young, 10 - 15 inches they have a tendency to be a bit skittish. and honestly, there is little you can do to change that. Tank mates are helpful, but that depends entirely on the aggressiveness of your aro.

low lighting, NOT dark is also helpful. do NOT wear RED anywhere near your tank. and i would find something other than glass for the top, some good thick plexiglass would probably be your best bet, with something to weigh it down.

in a few months or a year, he'll most likely calm down a bit. my 4 year old, 30+ inch aro calmed down significantly when she got to be close to 2 ft. and the younger set, my w/c silvers are starting to calm down now that they are well over 12 inches long.

Whats the point in lowering the water level? Is this meant to prevent jumping? If it is, theres no point in doing it, it'll jump if it wants to regardless of whether or not you lower the water level. Its more ideal to have as much water as you can in there right now anyways. The last thing you want is to have less water to dilute waste leading you to a whole bunch of other problems while you have a fish in there with so many open injuries.

good point. I'll leave water lvls full. Thanks.

Reduce level a couple of inches and add ketapang leaves and salt..... it brought my mine back from chipped scales. I would knock him out with clove oil or transmore and cut the tail so it grows back evenly.

Yah I've thought of knocking him out... but what if he jumps and breaks his tail again? I dont want him to die after being knocked out too many times. So if I dont have to I'll just leave him be But i'm totally gonna go the the LFS tomorrow and see if I should get a Flagtail as Tank mate. Does anyone know what Size I should buy for flagtail? 5inch should be good no?

What's on the back of the tank? He may see his own reflection and chase his own tail. If you have any other pets that may be freakin him out keep them away from the tank. Good luck. I've seen worse recover.

dark blue background. No other pets like dogs or cats just RTG. And I've never seen an aro so banged up before so I guess this is new to me. If you say you've seen worse than I'll believe you =D

Yah I kinda noticed that too about older ARo's... They seem more calmer and well behaived. At peak when my RTG just got use to the tank he would do a lot more daring things like move the bubble disk around... Swim behind the filter tube even though he barely fits but he would still try. Hopefully he will calm down after this incident.

I will definately probably buy plastic tops to go under the glass covers. There is no way he will jump through that i thnk.

That looked pretty bad...... Are there any spider web around the tank? Any bug of sort that could crawl on the tank wall? Take a second look at the surrounding of the tank. It's natural for aro's to jump to grab food.
