low lighting, NOT dark is also helpful. do NOT wear RED anywhere near your tank. and i would find something other than glass for the top, some good thick plexiglass would probably be your best bet, with something to weigh it down.
in a few months or a year, he'll most likely calm down a bit. my 4 year old, 30+ inch aro calmed down significantly when she got to be close to 2 ft. and the younger set, my w/c silvers are starting to calm down now that they are well over 12 inches long.
