That one is my biggest kel in the tank. It was from Rapps' 2nd batch. :irked:

I think the mismatched lateral line is present in not just nigromaculata I guess, have you compared the lateral line on other pbass?
yeah... actually I never thought about that... looking back nigramaculata's interrupted later line... actually happens at where the 2nd bar is... other cichlas have narrow angle turn of lateral line or interrupted as well, but much further behind... near or past the 3rd bar.
Again... I am saying what I see... not based on anything here.... haha

Thanks !!
Here are some other kels in the same tank similar size. Awaiting for transformation

I wonder if someone can answer this question: are those spangling in anal fin age dependent or size dependent???

I really think the spotting you see now at this size is common on most PBASS.
I have a few monos now and in the past that shared a similarity in the spotting you posted. I think the spotting you see now is not the characteristics of the Kelberi spotting but just a common spotting on most Cichla..

Again, only time will and think it's way too early. Not saying the ones you have are not Kelberi's just the spotting you shared also shows up on other Pbass.

james also i think a lot get's lost in the picture's. The one I posted is nothing comparied to your's and this my 2nd batch rapp's at 8 1/2'' just measured him.

age dependent vs. size dependent

that is a very generic question all cichla have this trait. but have you put into mind that these guys may also be affeted by water parameters and envoirnment?

holy...... 8 and 1/2"...... another steroid user?? haha, good job.
I don't have chance to measure them... the biggest one maybe 8" the rest
7 and 1/2 maybe... and few at 7" still. I agree a lot of coloration, spotting get lost in picture. In person they look so much more impressive. cool

anal fin spangling is this species' important characteristic marking... I am not sure the answer for this either, but if in deed that can be changed by environmental factors... a lot of people will freak OUT........ if kelberi don't turn out to be kelberi.. people can easily argue water parameter is not optimal..... too bad. And if anal fin characteristic disappeared after being put in captivity... that will be another :WHOA::WHOA:wtf argument... that definitely apply to other species of cichla.

Hopefully water and environment does not play a significant role here.

Time to take my son OUT, will resume tonight.

PEACE IS THE WORLD'S MOST VALUABLE TREASURE.
