Is Luther Sick?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just on a remote chance - have you been able to look inside his mouth for any signs of growth, from thyroid, or cancerous growths/tumours? I've seen this a few times over the years, if thyroid related it can typically be cleared up when supplemented with iodine.

It just seems like this is something more than just a HITH issue.

From what I can see there is nothing obstructing. No tumor. Thought has crossed my mind.

Alright man, good luck with him. Hopefully he bounces back to his former self soon.

One of my f1 Broko has a growth in its mouth, it has stayed small and never gets a large belly like the other bass doesn’t eat as much. Other than that he hangs with the larger fish one of the most territorial bass I have guards his staked spot fiercely.

Thanks everybody. I know this is a tough one. I checked the nitrates (among other things). Pretty low at about 5 -10. I will let the fish be until Thursday. Then do maintenance. We shall see what happens.
Merry Christmas.

Update:
Did 40% water change and cleaning yesterday. Did not add any salt. Didn't feed the fish.
Today Luther came to top quickly during feeding. Same old thing. Wouldn't eat. Theo was ravenous. Even ate a blackworm cube intended for oscar.
Luther has been sort of interested in the 5" jurupari lately so I got some feeders. Theo ate 6 and Luther ate 4.
Will monitor.
BTW Theo has eaten some feeders before when Luther was ill. She has been ravenous ever since. Hopefully will see this with Luther.

Have you tried frozen whole smelt with Luther?

No I haven't.
Actually did feed him feeders again yesterday (I know its sort of russian roulette). Also with some VitaChem.
I am feeding freeze dried shrimp and hikari sticks. He mouths them a bit but wont eat. But now notice if I leave some at the top of tank Theo will come back and eat the. Have not seen with Luther. He is still getting back up to snuff. Only eats 2 to 3 feeders. Theo gorges on the rest.
Current plan is to get him back up to snuff with feeders and viatchem weekly. Then after I feel the time is right wean them both to sticks.
Which is really weird. He used to eat everything and anything.
I personally think he has some internal stomach or intestinal problem. Hoping it is something that can heal.
He is looking good and have seen no flashing for about a week. Also removed oscars from the tank so there is no chance of tankmate stress. Just him and Theo.
