Is Luther Sick?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well,
I don’t know that he had clamped fins but his fins were often not erect. But lately he has been more alert with extended fins.
And as far as scraping or “flashing” I think it suggests an irritation but stressed fish can also exhibit. I have also seen normal healthy fish do this. If it happens repeatedly then there is most likely a problem.
I found the info on chlorine causing damage interesting (Safe dosage). I could see this being a potential problem. I am wondering also if a fish did get affected by chlorine or chloramines If it could now be sensitized to this. Almost like an allergic reaction.
As far as treatment, I noted that he was treated with General Cure in December.
But I am monitoring for sure. My biggest rule of thumb for an ill fish - they have got to eat. They also need vitamins.
BTW he ate some krill again today.

Not out of the woods...
He hadn't flashed for over a week. Today he scratched himself on the water return duckbill. Pretty bad, right near his eye. I looked closely and he had fresh pit right under his eye (did not see yesterday) Administered General Cure. Again, (last was a month ago). And salt . 1.5 ppt).
Raising temp from 81 to 83.
He did eat once today. Swimming all around. Fins erect.

Will now try to hold off feeders and see if he will eat some krill everyday.

Since the tank was cleaned Monday, his last treatment was a month ago and this pit obviously was bugging the heck out of him, I opted to treat with General Cure and salt again immediately. Rather than just do the water change salt routine alone.

This one is a stumper. I recall Cigars saying that HITH can be tough to beat with cichla. Maybe he can expound on that. Note that he has only got some small pits, and when he was younger I just treated with salt. Note also that the other bass has never been afflicted with this type of stuff. Luther may be pedisposed for this affliction. Whatever it is.

Have you considered taking him to a vet?

I don't think it's possible to develop an allergy to chlorine. Animals don't have as sensitive immune systems as us.

What vet? Where?

An update for everybody. Months ago I treated luther with metro for about 8 days after a round of general cure. He was pretty good after that.
But would flash about once a week or so.
I got some red hooks which introduced ich. I only saw it on Theo. Treated tank with salt for 10 days. After that Luther really snapped out of it.
He has been doing great for about 3-4 months. Finally no flashing. (red hooks no longer in tank).

My lesson learned, I should have done a heavy salt treatment after the metro. Some malady that was affecting his exterior.
Have also bumped up Safe dosages on water changes.

BTW have no room for quarantine tanks but do not plan on getting any more fish.
