Black coloration is /can be a sign of stress or distress. Most of the cichlid fish dan turn on or off their chromatophores...some of the fish just have more of the black/brown melanophores. There is no 100% black Demspey.

Yeah I agree....anytime I've kept a dempsey, the lower in the pecking order the more tan it was...but as it became more dominant, the darker brown or closer to black it got...that's when they're the most attractive, imo.
Just because you don't own nor seen one in real life does mean it don't exist(not saying I own one but theoretically its true). It's probably one of the rarer occasions just like seeing an albino person.
With fish being stressed...lol, are you guys kidding me? Stressed out fish are paled and coloration are very very light and very off color and not so attractive. The more attractive the color, the healthier and better mood the fish is in.

Regular JD in a tank with dark substrate. Jet black implies it is nothing but black. That fish is blue with black overtones. Still a nice JD though.
