so lepisosteids include both atractosteus and lepisosteus?

The Family Lepisosteidae includes the two genus Lepisosteus and Atractosteus. Both Genus and all species are called Lepisosteids in shorthand... It is easier to use this than to fully write out "the Genus and species of fish in the Family Lepisosteidae".

thank you for explaining it.... i just wish i could find one that wasnt illegal, but o well.... maybe i should move to new jersey... nearly every type of fish is legal there (so i've heard) except snakeheads
just move one state up ;) (or however you say that due to the border issue) to CO. nothing besides the CITES stuff is illegal

This is not true, CO bans Lepisosteids as well... Bowfin and a host of other fish (Piranha, wolf fish, Tilapia, ETC.)

I'm sorry, but that chart is not accurate, Phil. Where did you get it?
well, it's partially correct, except for this...

"Possession of the above species may be authorized as provided by Chapter 13 of these regulations (“Possession of Wildlife, Scientific Collecting and Special Licenses”) or Title 35, Article 80, C.R.S. (“Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act”), or as pets in private aquaria. However, release of any of the above species into waters of the state is prohibited.

Not true for private aquariums. I posted in the illegal fish response thread a while ago and copied and pasted the statute.

I highly doubt we would have a vendor from Colorado on here that lists Serrasalmus spp. in their stocklist on their public website if it were illegal.

it doenst really matter if a fish is illegal or not. people are gonna but them anyway to get what they want.

there are 2 families of true gar. lepisosteids and atractosteids(spelled right?). but they are all true gar. which are illegal in arizona.
i explained it the best i could but still not completely sure if its correct. poly, solomon, or jordan will probably explain it better. all true gar are illegal in arizona despite the scientific name.

If you read the regulation again you will find the answer to why I'm about to say.... Um no you are very much not correct...

May does not mean you can and under the actual possession law you would be required to have a permit for the listed prohibited species if you are to keep them in a private aquarium.
