Is this a good cray tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Soon to post pics of the crays. Please refrain from ID'ing them on this site, thanks. As far as I go, they are female procambarus clarkii and let's just keep it that way. :D

I'll buy that.

Some researchers found some specimens of procambarus clarkii that were genetic clones not too long ago, indicating that at least some clarkii individuals do have the ability to clone themselves. I'd bet the infamous marbles are a cross of clarkii and something else. Their body shape and proportions are very similar to clarkii.

Alright. These are some sorry excuses for photography, but the camera died as I was getting warmed up to the tank so these are all there are.

Four adults with plants. And duckweed.

holy crap, yours were huge! mine are almost too small to see! what's up with that!

Nice crays. :)

Your hair algae is like a Marimo ball on steroids. ;) Is it just engulfing the plant that was in that corner?

Kindof looks like a green Tribble.. I'd be carefull, they replicate faster than the crays...

Yeah, the algae mat has engulfed the plants. I can't be sure whether it's digesting them or just suffocating them. The java moss is putting up a good grow-fight but the other one hasn't got a chance. I'm thinking of trying this moss in all my tanks and doing away with plants altogether. It genuinely removes nitrAtes in magical ways that water lettuce and elodea have failed to so far.

I don't know whether I should offer them food right away or wait a day. I'll probably toss an asparagus head in for good measure. And they have worms and snails to hunt down.

He probably felt bad for his goof and me having to wait so long. Either way, it's fine by me as long as they toss me some babies in a month or two. Oscar is waiting.

Mine have grown pretty fast. Got 8 in the .5 - 1.25" range originally, and the largest couple are over 2" now, smallest is just over an inch. Each has moulted at least 3 times in the last month. It's pretty cool how much they puff up after each moult, increasing body size by up to 50%.

If you're curious, you can tell when they are going to moult soon by watching where the tail joins the main carapace. If you see a fleshy gap on top between where they join, the cray will likely be molting in the next few hours. One morning I woke up to 6 of the 8 having molted overnight. Tank looked like a cray graveyard with all the empty shells. ;)
