Any other local fish stores in your area? They ought to have glass tops. I bought mine from dr. Fosters and Smiths online.

I would keep the JDs as they get between 8"-10", whereas the oscar can easily exceed the 12" mark. Standard 55G tanks are 12" wide, which may or may not allow the oscar to turn without breaking its back.... I would leave atleast 16" of depth to allow the oscar to comfortably to turn around. A pair of JDs may be a better bet.

Yeah, skip the O's until you have a truly monster tank (120g+). JD's are cool, but I like the Firemouths better. I'm thinking about doing another tank with a Firemouth, a Green Terror & a big Loach squad. Probly a 72g bowfront. Anyhow, good luck & let us know how she goes. I think you got the right filter ideas.
