is this a red frontosa

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there are captive bred red frontosa, but none that would be considered "high quailty" IMO, as its not a naturally occurring fish and not very sought after if at all by the cichlid community, or atleast those among us who keep and breed cyphos that like to keep the bloodlines pure down to the collection point. i believe these red frontos are from in breeding low quality burundi type frontosa.

Basically what he's getting at is its not a species or fish its at most a artificial color strain of a species... Similar to all the Aulonocara jacobfreibergi with different names like eureka, german red etc. The names don't even reflect a collection point with special coloration but rather line breeding for a color strain that is at best a nick name for a fish. There is no scientific name denoting the traits found in a red frontosa. The question of is this a line bred frontosa is valid but there is no formal standards in any circles for red frontosa so they are kinda not regarded as anything.

The fact that they are hyper melonistic does make them unique, and I would argue that wild strains of such a fish would not be any more highly regarded than an readily available albino of another species.

what i mean by high quality is most red fronts online are turd brown this one has a baby blue top a yellow streak at the base of his fin and isnt a brown really at all

I find it hard to preserve frontosa when documentation surrounding them and their origins and scientific notation is only now developing. Gibberosa where a subspecies of frontosa until only a couple years ago. Ontop of that many fish are mislabled. I've see so many gibberosa listed on craigs list and they all look like burundi. I'm all for the preservation but really we in the hobby didn't know what was going on till like 3 years ago. Very few upper end front keepers even understood the diff beyond how valued zaire where over all others.

he was only like 10 inches in that pic, and not the largest of the group i grew out but he was more of a "high bodied" frontosa with a unique "nuchal hump" so i kept him as alpha over the others. heres his girl at like 8 - 9 inches.

only ten inches lol ii know there big fish but come on 10 inches how many years is that? and in your las pic dylz isnt the frontosa at the bottom right the alpha? because dont alphas turn black almost

haha, well he is about 5 or 6 years old, i had others that were 12 inches and this old timer in brooklyn has one that is like 14-15 inches. i think the darker color is a submissive color, the smaller fish tend to be more timid and darker coloration. when a frontosa is dominant there color is much more vivid and crisp imo but if you startle them the darken up pretty quick as to blend into the shadowed areas i believe. the female in the lower right was about 6-7 inches.
