Is this QT tank size sufficient

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would definitely think so. You might be fine in the 55 as well. I wish keeping these fish was a little less stressful haha. Supposed to be relaxing.
Cool thanks, I totally agree, not that I regret starting on them.

Personally I think a 55 would be more than adequate for those size fish. Might want to get an egg crate divider just in case there is some aggression.

I have a bunch egg crate divider laying around that I can use. Just curious what you guys do to keep the QT stay cycle. Should I leave a small fish it in at all time and keep the tank running, so it can be use for hospital and temp holding tank when not using for QT?

Something like a tiger barb or place or something?

Or empty it and put it away after QT and fill it up again when QT is needed?

thanks

Hi
So the 55 is up and running since yesterday. I moved some filter media from my 125 to it. Then I figure since there is no fish in it, I added enough pure ammonia to bring it up to 2.5 ppm. The fish are coming in on Tuesday or Wednesday.

How would I know the media would be enough for the new fishes?

I guess, I keep doing the ammonia until the night before the fish comes in, the do a big water change. Float the fish the next morning for 20 minutes. Drop the fish. Add prime. Leave the light off. Next day try to feed a little. Do ammonia and nitrite test.

Based on the water test result, add prime if needed the third day, test again daily. Large WC on fourth day. So on and so on until the 8 weeks up, if no disease?

Is this the correct approach?

Thanks

This is just my opinion. It seems to me that you would essentially be doing a semi fish based cycling. I have not tried dosing ammonia while fish are in the tank as they normally produce enough on their own and can negatively reactive to anything over .25 ppm.

I have also cycled a tank with fish and just had to accept that I would probably loose a guppy or two., not my smartest move but going forward I won't do that again. Sure there were spikes in all levels but the hardiest fish survived.

If this is a new tank and less than cycle you might just want to chance it and drop the fish into the new tank after an hour long drip.

Some other factors to consider, how expensive or rare are the fish? Would you be comfortable putting your prised fish in this new QT?

There is currently no fish in the tank. This is a QT tank. I added filter media to the filter from my established tank but I wouldn’t have fish in the QT until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. So I added ammonia to keep the bacteria alive.

If I am not doing it correctly, please let me know what is the proper way.

I paid couple hundreds for these fish and definitely don’t want them dead. I thought new fish should be QT, so I brought a tank for QT. Yes it is new but I had added some extra filter media in my 125 for months.

I moved these media to the QT plus some sands and some rocks. From my reading this should give enough bacteria to start the QT tank.
If not, how can I have a fully cycled tank with enough bacteria for 4-5 large fish?

since the QT normally wouldn’t have the fish in it.
Thanks

What you're doing may work, Im not sure. I set up my QT at the same time as my big tank and have just kept it running as a grow out tank for some smaller fish. Or a time out when my cichlids are being buttheads.

Let's see if others will chime in.

But if you are using it as hospital or grow out tank, how do you use it when you need QT but still has fish inside?

I might have messed up. I think I accidentally dosed too much ammonia into the QT and killed the beneficial bacteria.

I thought I was using the 1ml and accidentally used the 3ml one. Ended up adding 15 ml of pure ammonia which I think equates to more than 5 ppm.

This morning I did testing and I read 1 ppm of ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0 nitrate. Which mean totally uncycle tank. What I am curious is where did the other ammonia went to?

Any suggestions anyone?

I can move some more sponge filters from other tanks but I am worry that might cause a mini cycle for my existing tanks.

Should I just add the new fish in the QT next week regardless, add prime and do very large WC every other day?

Or add the fish to QT or 2-3 days with Prime, monitor for obvious disease, give them a few days to recover then add to DT if no obvious symptom?

Or just float and add to QT?

Also, for the QT, what is the best way to keep it cycle long term?

Thanks
