Is this QT tank size sufficient

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I QT for 8 weeks, I add a small amount of water from the main tank they will go into daily, with small water changes, this allows the new fish to build up resistance to any bacteria they will encounter that they may have not yet built up resistance to.
To me, Qting is not just about keeping stuff out of the main tank, its also about things in the main tank new fish may never have encountered before.

I love the white lips but my last two attempts ended badly. Think I detailed the first one I bought. Well on Sunday afternoon. My juvy was alive and doing well. By the evening he was no where to be seen. Guess I should have let him grow out a little longer. It is those kind of mistakes that anger me Easily preventable.

It happens to all of us. I find that there is no definite rules to all these and some work while other time doesn’t. I guess that’s what gets us frustrated while keeping us still going.

This is a great idea and makes perfect sense. I will be definitely doing it. Thank you

I'll add my .02 and my experience with it fwiw. I have a 265 and have been bit a few times by not quarantining. Treating a big tank is a real pita. Twice for ich, once for bloat because I didn't take the time to quarantine. So when it came time to buy new fish I setup a 55 gallon and used a cycled canister filter. I don't remember the exact number of fish I bought but it was in the range of 8-10 male peacocks that were about 4 inches each. I felt like there wasn't enough room in the 55 for them and that they were constantly fighting and stressing each other out. So I added them to the main tank prematurely and guess what had issues and had to treat the big tank again. I guess what I'm trying to say is its very important to quarantine but if the tank you are using isn't big enough there will be stress and problems and that kind of defeats the purpose. I hope this doesn't turn out to be the case for you but just wanted to let you know my experience with it.

yes, this is exactly what I am struggling with. I just recent treat ich, bloat in my main tank and it’s a lot from both financial and effort wise. It’s all good now with the main tank and I did lost 1 fish.

Hence I went out and brought a 55, which I just picked up and brought home 10 minutes ago. I wanted a 75 or 90 but they were sold out.

I am concern they will fight in a 55 also. I wonder if I should go order a 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank and use for QT. Only thing with that is it will be hard to observe the fish.

Thanks

I'm fortunate that my fish can make it in a 29 so long as it is one at a time. Salt is easier to add to this tank and I run it at 5 rpm. Yes I know that is high but I will dilute it down over the next month.

I was in an ich fight as well so both the main tank and the hospital got the salt treatment. Whatever size you chose make sure it can handle the fish without undue stress.

Thanks, that's what I am trying to determine, the correct QT tank size to minimize stress for the fish while minimize the amount of med if I need to. I guess I will monitor and is it gets bad, I will just move them to the main tank and hope for the best. I will start hunting for a use 75 for QT, I think 75 should be sufficient for QT for my future fish, right? I usually buy 4-5 fish at a time and in size 4-6 inches.

I would definitely think so. You might be fine in the 55 as well. I wish keeping these fish was a little less stressful haha. Supposed to be relaxing.
