Water changes are absolutely necessary.

dude seriously tell me more:drool::drool::drool:.

There are a lot of people who have done drip systems or automatic water changers. Very effective. I love mine.

i dont have to be told that WC's are necessary, i dont want to swim in my fecies so i dont subject my fish to that. but i will be having my 120g in an apartment for quite a bit. so a drip system on it probably aint on the list, but it will work for my 280g so i want to hear more on the issue.

will there be much stress to my fish with the WC's? i don't see where the stress would out weigh the health benefits if it really stresses the fish at all.

Two 50% water changes back to back is the equivalent of a 75% water change.

People do it all the time, and their fish never die. There are a few of my clients who I give 80% water changes to weekly or bi-weekly, and their fish never die. I stick to 30-50% on my tanks though.
If you have a growout, you could do more. There are people on here that do a 50% water change every other day on their growouts.

If there is any observable stress or a behavior change, you are doing the water changes wrong.
