I shouldn't be giving out advice - tried half a dozen different species but failed miserably in all cases :D

I trust you 100% ;) I have VERY stunted male BN pleco in the 125. He is 3" TL and 2 years old. I found him as a fry in a HOT mag 250 filter. :( I hung on to him just to give him a good home. Link: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205115

The water in this tank is pristine and he wouldn't need much of a footprint and there is no competition for food. What do you think?

6 female bettas

+1 I got two over the weekend, they are awesome to watch.. and with plants.. and their vibrant colors... it would turn out perfect..

IMO, a 10G is not too small for pair of Rams (or curviceps), but I appreciate that you are erring on the side of more room ...

female bettas is a nice idea, or maybe killifish ... ?

A ten gallon would be okay for rams but I would say 20 gallon minimum. I vote for dwarf puffers or female betta's. Or you could take you kids to the pet store and let them choose some small fish. Like tetras or guppies or something.

Dwarf puffers and female bettas are good suggestions. I would also add, few african dwarf frogs would be fine in a 10 gallon. Shrimp or some dwarf crays would be alright too. How about thai micro crabs?

Oh an African clawed frog would be cool.

Electric blue rams seem to stay a bit smaller than the nice tank-raised blue rams, so maybe a pair of those? I really don't think a tank that size is too small for rams.

I would second the female betta thing. I used to keep 6 of them in a 10 gallon on my kitchen counter and they were awesome. They do tend to bicker amongst themselves, so give them plenty of cover to get out of each others' way. You can get one of every color and have quite a pretty little tank.

Back to dwarf cichlids... what about a pair of Taeniacara candidi? They stay fairly tiny, about 2 - 2.5" I think. They're not seen very often and might fit snugly into your tank.

I'd go a heavily planted SE Asian tank ... sparkling gouramis and Scarlet badis. Badis have been called the 'apisto's of asia' ... smiliar in behavor to dwarf cichlids, but on a smaller scale. Throw in some cherry shrimp.
