Electric blue rams seem to stay a bit smaller than the nice tank-raised blue rams, so maybe a pair of those? I really don't think a tank that size is too small for rams.

I would second the female betta thing. I used to keep 6 of them in a 10 gallon on my kitchen counter and they were awesome. They do tend to bicker amongst themselves, so give them plenty of cover to get out of each others' way. You can get one of every color and have quite a pretty little tank.

Back to dwarf cichlids... what about a pair of Taeniacara candidi? They stay fairly tiny, about 2 - 2.5" I think. They're not seen very often and might fit snugly into your tank.

The fact that the EB rams are color morphs kind of puts me off, but I love how they look TBH.. Why that puts me off I have no idea.. GBR are not German and are F1,000,000 farm bred anyway so it's really is no different. Mikrogeophagus ramirezi was the first species I ever bred.. Can't belive I'm admitting that :duh: lol!

I have local access to very high quality Taeniacara candidi, both males and females. From my homework, they would not work in such a small tank either by mosts standards. I pass on a pair of Apistogramma panduro every weekend too :(

Send me some of the T. candidi! I have a 40g breeder that I just freed up. :D

The electric blues are actually really nice. It's a metallic powder blue that really catches the light. With the black tips on the dorsal, it makes them a really sleek looking little fish.

I forgot about Scarlet Badis. Those are definitely cool, too. And small.

Might I suggest a pair of peacock gudgeons (Tateurndina ocellicauda)? They are great little fish, with quite a bit personality for something so small. Both the males and females are little color shows. They breed quite easily, as well, provided some small caves or tubes are available.

To add a little interest to the upper layers of the tank, I'd add a small school of one of the small rasbora species.

A small planted tank, lighting is pretty simple and some easy plants with and assortment of Amano, Cherry, Ghost shrimp ect and a few (3) Ottos and a small school (7) Neons or Cardinals.

What about a pair of shell dwellers? I admit I know next to nothing about their husbandry, but there are many species that only get 2-2.5inches.

That's another good option. I kept a breeding group of Lamprologous ocellatus in a 10 gallon for a couple of years. They top out at about 1.5". They're super easy to keep and breed...pretty much just add shells, fish and water. :)

I have very soft water, so I added crushed coral sand as the substrate.

Your thinking paludarium? That's a pretty good idea, thanks for going outside the box D! I was sold on those frogs until I saw they are $250!!
haha yeah thats the only downside with pdf's actually a lot easier to care for than you would think tho. Plus what you hope for is they start breeding, and you can make your money back easy :)

also if you go fish, you should defintely do a pair of killies, maybe some clowns or you could probly squeeze in a pr of golden wonders, they are crazy, snap at anything that hits the surface

Oops forgot my own personal favorite, triops would be perf in there :)

I'd go a heavily planted SE Asian tank ... sparkling gouramis and Scarlet badis. Badis have been called the 'apisto's of asia' ... smiliar in behavor to dwarf cichlids, but on a smaller scale. Throw in some cherry shrimp.

i vote this, sparkling gouramis are very interesting to watch, never seen a badis in person so i can't comment on them (although from pictures i can say that their coloration is amazing)

I think that tank would be sweet with a L46 Zebra Pleco..:naughty:
I'm actually looking at doing a 10 gal Glowfish tank for my kids for Christmas and sneaking a Zebra in there for me..;)
