Jack Dempsey - Visual Growth Rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We will see in a few weeks/ a month or so. It is great that this discussion has been brought up. Now we have some good dialogue and an example of how to sex a JD for reference.

I decided to throw these pics up, the fish has not grown any, but has became acclimated to its 55 gallon suite. The dark "stressed" colors have faded. You can see the gill plate a little better in both pics.

I have never owned a fish that took to being hand fed so easily. She/he chomps down frozen brine shrimp and blood worms like crazy. I feed 3 times daily at this point, a tiny bit of HBH Baby Oscar Bites in the morning, Brine shrimp/Blood worms at lunch and the other in the evening. I am feeding about 1/3-1/2 of the "gum-drop" at a time, which works out to be as much as it can eat in 45 seconds. In the second pic you can see its distended belly, little piglet!

It has been a full week and the fish is completely acclimated and has a full stomach. It is already starting to beg for food.

I am pretty sure it will be male. I go by the large amount of blue on the gill plate to tell if it's female, I've got a couple of pics to show you what I mean. The first one is my male and the next one will have both of them in it and you can see the difference.....hope this helps!

We will see when she/he gets bigger and its mature coloration is in. Thanks for the input and pics! How big are those male and female?

I use a Kodak EasyShare Z710. Its a basic low end point and shoot digital camera. Check out http://www.aquatic-photography.com/ . It is a sister site of MFK and has great tutorials on manual setting and taking pics of fish.
