Jack Dempsey .vs. Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All we need now is an electric blue Oscar. POW. If anybody owned those, they'd pwn the fish market hands down. I'd dump my O and get one right now.

yeah thats a tough choice, as far as personality goes id go for an oscar but my ultimate choice would be a dempsey, they are much prettier IMO and while not quite as outgoing they can be a bit personable if your lucky and are much easier to house since they stay a more manageable size, here is a male i got rid of about a month ago, he really was gorgeous (even prettier when actually in the tank but didnt have any recent pics of him in the tank, but he was always nice and dark like that)

Petco Oscars are the most inbred ever, especially the albinos. But so are the JD's. Both species get misplaced eyes and crooked mouths, beaks and buckteeth. It's pretty sad.

yeah mine was from a lfs that ordered most of his fish from don conkel (not sure if the JD is from him or not) but its def from a different supplier than the big chain stores so im guessing it may not have been as inbred, that makes a big difference with any fish

i say jd, easier to house, better colors imo. but the big o has awesome personality. both r cool fish but its jd for me because that is the fish that got me into the hobby!

poll would have been a good idea . . . I'll add my vote for JDs over Oscar, every time . . . I like the spangling look of a JD and all of it's color . . . yes, Oscar's can have a more interesting personality, but don't find them anywhere near as attractive as a JD

also, a JD can manage in a smaller tank, and are generally healthier and not nearly as messy . . .

IMO Oscars are more like dogs, fairly similar personality and seem to recognize and associate with regulars in the household. Also not quite as territorial as JD's.

I've had JDs that recognize and associate with the regulars in my household. The female that I currently have comes to the front of the tank anytime I come into view. And even though my wife very rarely feeds her she comes right up to the front of the tank to greet her. She even hangs out and watches our new kitten who sits at the front of the tank and swats her. Just watches him and follows him around when he moves.
