poll would have been a good idea . . . I'll add my vote for JDs over Oscar, every time . . . I like the spangling look of a JD and all of it's color . . . yes, Oscar's can have a more interesting personality, but don't find them anywhere near as attractive as a JD

also, a JD can manage in a smaller tank, and are generally healthier and not nearly as messy . . .

Yeah not nearly as messy as an Oscar but still pretty dirty. I have had some JDs that have been little piggies.

IMO Oscars are more like dogs, fairly similar personality and seem to recognize and associate with regulars in the household. Also not quite as territorial as JD's.

:iagree: oscar's have great personalities. electric blue JDs are beautiful, and i really want one [unfortunately not very compatible with my Os], but to me they are more of just a fish. i like the look of the oscars better. colors might not be as nice, but i like the look of their bodies and faces better. again, more personality there. i got my Os because i wanted more of a pet sort of fish, rather than just a fish kind of fish. i wanted something with more of a personality, that i would feel comfortable giving a name to and everything, rather than something like my glofish, which are very pretty, but none of them have names, because they all act the same and aren't much of a naming fish. so yeah, oscars

To be fair to both species, I have met some retarded Oscars and some responsive JD's. On the whole, Oscars are more responsive but plenty of JD's are really watchful and beggy, too.

Same can be said for goldfish. Of all the underrated monster fish, I think goldfish get the short straw too often. My mom had a common goldfish in a 60g tank that responded to voices, chased fingers, even did a wiggle dance on cue. You've just got to spend a few minutes in front of the stock tank and observe before buying. Stick out your finger and see who investigates. Pick a bully for that matter.

But back to cichlids...

Petco Oscars are the most inbred ever, especially the albinos. But so are the JD's. Both species get misplaced eyes and crooked mouths, beaks and buckteeth. It's pretty sad.

my O came from petco [i don't normally buy petco, but i really liked this little guy. though he's not that little anymore. he's growing fast], but i don't notice any deformities on him or anything..though i'm not sure what to look for.. :/ his eyes look fine.. lol. [btw, i'm not saying anything about you being wrong or anything. i'm just saying that mine seems alright..i hope. lol. just don't want you to misunderstand or anything :] ]

EDIT:: i did see a very thin, long bodied O the other day there though. i dunno if it was from being inbred or if it was somehow a mix between an O and something else [if that's possible], but it just didn't look normal to me. i don't think i'll be going back there for anything anymore though...i was gonna pick up some ghost shrimp, but that whole tank [15 ghost shrimp, 8 bamboo shrimp, some angels] was pretty much dead. there were like two live ghost shrimp, three or four live bamboo shrimp, and out of like three angels, one was dead and another was stuck to the filter, almost dead... needless to say, i didn't get any shrimp..

around me all the jack dempseys look so washed out and i can't seem to find a good looking male so oscar for me

Hard decision this is. I think they both look great in a tank together as their colors compliment each other by giving nice contrast. I think i have to still vote for the JD though in the long run. They are a much prettier fish.

Agreed, love both fish and I've kept the combination many times. And they're so different it's hard to choose...I'm a bit surprised at the "JDs are more aggressive" posts. While I think oscar aggression is way overstated by the casual fishkeeper I've never had a JD that was the least big aggro. Even the breeding JDs I've had were very tolerant of tankmates.

Is anyone selling/keeping WC JDs? I've never seen one I don't think.

Jack D's ups O's down.
