Hi,

Could you guys give me some general info on JDs? Like average adult size, how aggressive ( mildly or highly), minimum tank size, and anything else you can throw out there. Thx

The largest jd I've ever seen was 12". They generally are 8" for males and 6" for females. Minimum tank size for one would be a 40 breeder. They're mild tempered and timid. There are a few types of jds, there are standard, gold, and electric blue jack dempseys. They do well with other mild tempered cichlids. All i can think of off the top of my head. :D

They are also very easy to pair off, and the regular JD grow fairly quick as compared to EBJD.. The Reg JD is also pretty hardy.. The EBJD are alot less hardy and it is harder to get them to full size... Jack dempseys are a great fish with alot of personality.. As for agression I think it all depends on the fish, I have seen some mean Jacks and also some laid back jacks so it all depends, but your best tank mates are other semi agressive cichlids and fish of similar size..

When you say timid, you mean they are the type that gets spooked easy? Or are they the type that are out front and not afraid? Hows the growth rate?

I have had several different jacks over the years and i have found thet it deppends a lot on the individual fish as to there temperment.

I agree,
i've also had several and for the most part they are quite passive with the exception of the one i currently have, rules the tank.

Hardy eaters,7-9" in size,diggers.

I've kept them with GT's,Convicts,FM's,Salvini,Blue Acara's in large community tanks, very popular fish for good reason.

I have a JD that for the most part is rather shy and mild agression towards my Jag that is half his size. My Nephew has a male JD that has alwasy been very agressive and never been able to keep anything else with it. As said before each fish is going to be different.

Have had my male jd for almost a year now. He is so shy/skittish, he will crash into my heater if I walk in front of the tank, with the light on. He will not eat with the light on. It sucks very much. I even bought him a female , and he doesn't care. lol Also he's very picky on eating............

Thats really sad. Ive owned fish like this before. I dont know why they get skittish all of a sudden. I think they were just afraid of me, even though I did nothing on purpose to scare them.
