Young ones can be found in shallower waters, maybe 2 ft deep.
The adults seem to prefer depth of 6 ft or more (probably due to bird predation).
I 've seen a pair (male 10", female 5-7") defend an area of about 250 gallons.

Below a much smaller area, only a few thousand gallons, where they do not dominate,
the population of JDs is small, and they are quite torn up.
