Jag tank size?

It has been explained to me like this.
1. Pick a species of fish
2. Find out the maximum adult size
3. Multiply that 4 times for the length and 2 times for the width.
4. The fish has plenty of room to swim and turn around comfortably.

Example:
Jaguar Cichlid - average adult size is roughly 16-18".
Tank size is no less 7'x 2'6"x 2'.
That is an ideal setup for life term.
Can they do fine in a 6x2x2 ? Sure, but why not make them as happy as can be ?

No doubt bigger is better but most will find a standard 180 more accessible.

I think what aquarists need to be mindful of is not just what Jay stated, but also the overall mental health and stimulation that a fish will receive in captivity. Overcrowding is a known trigger of stress in fish, and there are researchers (a number of them) that now believe that finfish can experience things such as pain, they have long term memories, and can even experience forms of mental illness. Many of us have read about, or seen first hand this type of behavior, such as an adult fish losing their life long mate, and then moping in a corner and refusing to eat for days/weeks on end.

I think that one has to take in more than just the physical characteristics of the fish, and their environment, but also the psychological aspects of keeping an animal in captivity.

I still think it's strange that people can think it's ok to put a fish in a tank that is roughly the same width as the fish and only two and half times its length.This is not some lazy lungfish it's an active predator capable of high speeds.
Is this a form of husbandry that should really be defended?

No one is saying keept it there for life just grow out

The "article" is absolutely preposterous. The same person will tell you the minimum size of an enclosure to house an elephant is the size of his bedroom.

Just because somebody with a name posted something online doesn't make it true. Did you see any reasoning or logic in the post?

The same person also claims that tank height doesn't matter. He needs to have a conversation with my altums that are living in a 3' tall tank.

Appreciate and respect your fish.

I think the important thing is....

L LogiBear , can you upgrade earlier if your better judgment decided it was better at 18 months instead of 24?
