Jaguar Cichlid Gender? (Parachromis managuensis)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah makes me think male but hopefully others will chime in here as well. and yeah he should be fine, its just two days, i would just feed him like normal you don't want to make the water dirty before you leave. but yeah i leave my fish on the weekends sometimes when i go to visit my parents and they do just fine

i hope, i suppose i can wait a few weeks, but id like to find its gender asap... PetSmart is no help.. theres other pet shops in town that are better, better quality food, fish, decor, etc, but theyre more pricey... cheched PS and they have Jags for 3.99 a peice, this other place has the Jags, the same size for 8.99 a peice

If your coming down to Denver. Cichlid Warehouse has some Jags as well. I am currently raising some young jag as well and I can't tell with mine or from the picture you posted. You should give it some more time. At least another month to be sure. But if you want more to increase you chances of Male/Female you can pick up some more from them. Also check out Fish Palace there right up the street from one another in Auroura, Colo.

Looks like a female to me, but the next couple of months will be telling. Mine started pairing off around 4"-5"; it was only then that I definitively knew their sex.

Also, I agree with High City Rida, if you want a male, purchase a couple more. Jag juvies are usually cheap, so I'd purchase 5 more. Statistically, all other things being equal, if you sampled 6 fish of unknown gender, at least one will almost certainly be a male (>98%).

I know others have had great success with RD/Midas crosses from PetSmart, so you might want to take a chance on some fish from there. At 3.99, you don't have much to lose.

My only problem is that the ones in PetSmart are small, like 2.5 - 3.0 inches (Mine is 3.5 - 4.0 inches), if i wait another month or more, im afraid hell be to big and kill them as soon as they hit the water...

Ok.. This is confusing!!!

Can someone post specific pointers to sexing Jags?

What do you guys think about this Jag? Male or Female?

that is a male. notice the spotting on the bottom and top of the big spots. females when bigger dont have that. its easier to tell the bigger they are at a glance if male or female. as with most fish its always the male that has better colors and markings.

as for finding your jag a mate, my male is 11 inches and female is 5. her constant baby making has stunted her growth as he continues to grow. he dont mess with her because she will turn his world upside down. size difference isnt a huge deal as long as its not small enough to fit in the others mouth it should be fine. i personally think its still to soon to tell but your jag does look alot like my female did before it matured. if it dug around and its tube was out its a female. and usually when they dig to clear a spot without a mate its usually a female in my experience. thats how i tell when my girls are ready to breed usually. but if all else fails only time will tell.. ive had two batches this month. im about to start breeding them for feeders instead of convicts ugh.
