yeah im thinking im gonna give the jag a try as long as when i go the ones they have are healthy, if the bichirs look healthier it'll be an even tougher decision i appreciate all the input tho
These people saying to get a Jag are giving advice without even knowing the facts. What are the tanks dimensions? Is it a 100g long? I can guarantee most of these guys haven't grown a Jag out to full size and don't know just how big they can get. If it's a 4' tank, it won't be fair to a full grown male Jag, you need at least a 6' x 18" tank in the long run. If it's a 4' tank there's still plenty of awesome cichlids to choose from that will fit the bill....you don't have to go with the bichirs lol.
@ alexpie, senegals don't sit at the bottom of tank all day long, they're very active.
Adult size for senegal bichirs is 8-12", senegals over 12" are extremely rare. I chose the bichir for that tank size. 180 gallon minimum for a jag, imo (or at least a 5x2x2 150).
Senegals are very active, mine were always always swimming around mid-lower levels of the tank. They would also go to the surface when they would see me approach the tank and wait for food. I highly recommend them.
What are the dimensions of the 100g? There are a lot of cichlids you can keep with the bichirs. If you are only getting 2 senegal bichirs, you could easily add a large SA/CA cichlid. With the right foot print, you could even keep a jag with them. I would not just keep 2 sens in a 100. Lots of options of fish you could keep with them.
I agree, and depending on the tank's footprint, you could keep various cichlids with the senegals. Their scales are like armour. Actually I used to have a couple and my cichlids totally ignored them.
