jaguar or oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscar's are pansy's, PERIOD. they get beat up by fish half their size. plus they are very suceptible (sp.) to disease and they are sloppy eaters... half their food comes out their gills. definately keep the Jag, and upgrade tanks when the time calls for it...its only 2 inch now... will be fine for quite some time. Jags are awesome, and they are down right astonishing to look at when full grown. Oscars get uglier with age. (obviously my opinion)

I don't think there's a difference in the growth rates among oscars (red, tiger, albino, etc.) they all eat as much as you'll feed them and grow quickly. I agree that some oscars can get up to 15" but I've seen very few who do. Most get around a foot in captivity. We're talking about a 2" oscar by himself in a 75 gallon tank....sure 90, 110, 125, 150 gallons would be great but IMO 75 is "enough" if you keep the tank well filtered and don't over feed.

one oscar does completely fine in a 75 gallon tank. The average size for an adult oscar in captivity is 12". They can get bigger, but if you want to get into the possibilities, I have seen a 17" oscar, just like I have seen 7' humans and 5' tall humans.

The likelihood is the oscar will not outgrow that tank. There is certainty though the jag will.

Oscars are as common as gold fish and it's hard to tell which craps more and fouls the water faster, a full grown Jag is an awsome display. If I had a 75 and could keep only one I would deffinatly go with the Oscar. As a single wet pet they are far more personable and interactive. You will need to keep on top of water changes/filter maintenance as it grows and don't let it train you as far as when and how much it eats, because it will.

ok so those guys above are the oscar lovers i told you about... oscars get up o 15" easily... jaguars(male) around 16" females round 14" captive jaguars do, but are not common for getting up to the 21+ inches they get to in the wild...

Out of the five posts before yours, four of them said get the Oscar because of tank size not because they're Oscar lovers. Only one guy said he's biased towards O's.

I've not seen a 15" Oscar, not saying they don't exist but it's not very common. Also I've been a Paracromis fan for years and have never seen a 21" F0 Managuese....but I'd love to one day. Know where I can have a gander at one? Hook me up....:naughty:

i ment they do not get that size in aquariums.. if you read the thread i said 16 for male and 14 female roughly and thats max(in the wild they report them at 21+).... you got all these people saying too big.. both fish are too big(once full grown):)

o yea i almost forgot why i hate oscars so much...(was tryin not to hate but a couple guys above got me fired up) THEY ARE THE GOLD FISH OF THE CICHLID WORLD HANDS DOWN!!:headbang2 some kid was talkin bout breeding them a month ago... i was like??? lol go ahead inbreed them some more!! HA! they ugly as hell too...

if you never gonna upgrade, get rid of both of them... and go with smaller cichlids...

I would gladly take a Jag over an Oscar any day! But as for your 75, the O would do better. Ideally a larger tank would be best though. I see a lot of people who keep Oscars in 75s and they seem to look and do quite well. I just think they look pretty tight in a 75 once they reach 10" or so. Jags look better to me in every aspect but I would never tell someone to keep one in a 75 for life. Keep the O and if a larger tank becomes available in the future get it. If it's large enough you could get your O a tankmate or two. Good Luck.

Oscar. I have gotten rid of fish just to keep my o, up graded 2 times to keep my o, so go with the o. Jags are cool too, im just an o lover
