ok so those guys above are the oscar lovers i told you about... oscars get up o 15" easily... jaguars(male) around 16" females round 14" captive jaguars do, but are not common for getting up to the 21+ inches they get to in the wild...

YOUR TANK IS TOO SMALL FOR EITHER FISH!! but if you are going to keep one it don't matter because both will be to big for your tank.

you should honestly trade both of them in for smaller cichlids.. you just asked me which one to keep so i said go for jaguar... but if people are gonna talk about tank size you might as well find out the truth instead of being tricked into keeping the oscar, since both of them will be too big eventually!

i don't know what kind of oscars maduro is talking about because i have seen some big ones over a foot easily..
20" jags are more common than 15" O's. O's don't "easily" get to that size either, it takes very frequent waterchanges and feedings to get them to that size, the average O will max out at 13-14". An adult oscar kept alone will be fine in a 75 gallon.

Oscar's are pansy's, PERIOD. they get beat up by fish half their size. plus they are very suceptible (sp.) to disease and they are sloppy eaters... half their food comes out their gills. definately keep the Jag, and upgrade tanks when the time calls for it...its only 2 inch now... will be fine for quite some time. Jags are awesome, and they are down right astonishing to look at when full grown. Oscars get uglier with age. (obviously my opinion)
That has nothing to do with anything and your arguements aren't even completely true. There's no such thing as a 'clean' cichlid over 10" long, oscars are actually extremely hardy fish (much more so than jags), and every fish starts to get ugly at a certain age, and imo, that age is about the same for both species, although it really depends on how well they are cared for. Besides, a jag couldn't even live in that tank permanently (my reason for saying your arguements are irrelevant).

thats why there like the most common fish for hole in the head disease... they are so overbread its not even funny go to petco they have 40 of them...:screwy:... it's called proper filtration and water changes... that kid above is like as long as you don't feed it all the time and do water changes aka not keep it healthy..lmao a well breed taken care of oscar will be 14" all day and ugly every day...

o yea theres, a lot of fish that look good till the day they die, no clue what your talking about on that one? a lot of cichlids actually get better with age.. no feeders ever!! and you'll see the best colors out of any cichlid... this thread is done, hopefully the kid got rid of both fish and got some smaller ones

I'm confused about this post^^^

It would be helpful if you'd use people's usernames rather than just saying "that kid".

thats all you got guy? truth on oscars hurts.. o well.

lol this whole thread got crazy... as you can tell i hate oscars.... like i said earlier hopefully he got rid of both fishes and got some smaller fish, even though i hate oscars they seriously dont belong in a 75 gallon their whole lives... fish are like family in my eyes and they all have personalities(some better than others). Oscars with proper conditions and health do get big and as someone stated earlier they have seen them 15" plenty of times.. fish don't grow if their conditions/health are poor, and all you people say the don't get over 10.. here on the east coast they do.. my boy loves oscars and has giants(round a foot and beefy)... numerous LFS stores have the biggest ones i've ever seen(don't know age) in with Pacus... i just got ripped because people were saying an oscar will be fine in a 75 gallon... no way! and like i said if he is upgrading in future Jaguar for win with some sort of catfish till they outgrow(1 fish tank is lame)

thanks everybody i think i will keep the O , unfortunatly right now i cant upgrade to a bigger tank but in the future i will probably be getting a 85g or 90g

fyi, unless they make those in "longs", never seen an 85 gallon... that tank is only taller than your 75 gallon... you would probably want a 125 otherwise just keep him cramped in the 75... also if those tanks are made in longs they will be really shallow... so not worth it either way...

Yes, for a Jag get at least a 6' tank. If you do get a 180g, he can have some tankmates and still have his own little 'spot' to claim.

Geez guys, does it have to turn into an argument? Ugly fish are an OPINION thank you very much. I personally think Oscars are ugly too but that doesn't mean everyone does, otherwise they wouldn't be so popular....and I certainly will not flame anyone for liking them. I think bulldogs are ugly but they're so ugly it makes them cute.

Well it's kind of hard to respond to a post that I didn't even understand.

lol this whole thread got crazy... as you can tell i hate oscars<-- why? :screwy:

.... like i said earlier hopefully he got rid of both fishes and got some smaller fish, even though i hate oscars they seriously dont belong in a 75 gallon their whole lives <-- why don't you think a 75 gallon is suitable for a 14" fish?

Oscars with proper conditions and health do get big and as someone stated earlier they have seen them 15" plenty of times.. fish don't grow if their conditions/health are poor, and all you people say the don't get over 10.. here on the east coast they do.. <-- I'm not totally disagreeing with you there, but the maximum size just depends on the genes. Yes, if an O maxes out at 10", there's probably something wrong, but 12-14" is perfectly normal for a healthy O.

i just got ripped because people were saying an oscar will be fine in a 75 gallon... no way! <-- Again, why? A 75 gallon is 18" wide, which is enough width for even a 16" O, and a 75 provides enough volume to be able to manage the water quality fairly easy, so what's the problem?
And my final question (for this post): how much experience do you actually have with oscars? Based on your hate for them, I'd assume none? If this is so, then why are you even attempting to give advice on them and arguing with people who have actually kept them?
