If it is for research without killing the fish then why not? Especially because it wasn't altered in anyway just bred until the match they wanted was found. That hardly seems cruel or abusive. Who knows what they may learn, maybe nothing, maybe something significant. I would not compare this to the blood parrots or other injected or physically altered fish.
