Here is a pic of mine when he was about 1 year old...roughly 6" or so...see how the head and body are getting thicker?

I guess you just have to appreciate the beauty of the Jack Dempsey...they are so common, it seems every body has one or two. I think they are one of the most underrated and underappreciated C/A's. Mine are very reclusive, and very mean...my female is meaner than the male. So if you are looking for a fish that is full of personality and will come out and show itself alot; the Jack Dempsey probably isn't for you. There are exceptions, but the ones I have owned have all been very reclusive...but that just adds to the beauty of the Jack Dempsey in my opinion.
I live in temple hills MD and im going to tropical fish world in gaithesburg. It's an hour drive that's why I put quotes around LFS or LPS lol. Im going there because apparently they are one of the retailers that buy Jeff Rapps stock.

ya mine larger one from my lfs has a lot of personality and never hides, he swam up my python tube and got stuck when i wasn't looking and he still wasn't scared of me, he jumps out of the water biting my finger if i don't get the black worms in the tank fast enough, he is always up at the top of my tank when i walk in, he is a pig and i spoil him but that is because he won't eat any pellet(trust me i starved him for 2 1/2 weeks and tried 3 completely different brands). Now the smaller ones i got from ken always hide, the pair are blue gene and about 2"ish but they are getting better now, they are starting to come out for food.
But i have also seen other jack that people have had them since they were an inch and they are now 5" and they still hide all the time. i must have been lucky. if you get a jack, look for one that is always out and picking on everyone and not scared of you. Thats what i did and i love mine.

Jacks are awesome, never had a GT but I would like to try one. From what I've read you'd be as well to flip a coin as to ask for opinions, they seem to be split.
i have a pair of jd and a green terror. in my experiance the jd pair are very shy and only get to see them properly when its feeding time on the other hand the gt comes to greet me every time i go close to the tank both are beautiful and agressive fish its a shame you cant get both of them
Haha, your plan was similar to mine. I want a Nic but nobody local has one. I'd have to drive an hour and a half which I suppose isn't that bad. But lately here in Michigan the roads are crap. On the other hand we have an LFS that has some nice JD's. I might stop by and look to see if they have GT's because I love both!
