JDM style

If you search youtube for Aquarium Co-ops Hong Kong visits you'll see examples of this. yes, it is called "Japanese Domestic market" its a 20H with a full sized giant gourami, giant snakehead and arowana or RTC's. Looks more like a chum bucket. I'll admit one of my communities is well overstocked but nowhere to this degree, i bought groups, grew them out and never moved on from the rest.

Another tank has about 100 small fish ( deep bodied and larger characins like hemiodus) and a large bocourti. i like the dichotomy of a large fish swimming amongst so many smaller ones.

I must admit I didn't know what JDM meant, and after looking it up I still can't put my finger on it.
The first thing that pops up in my search, is an Amano style tank design, an almost zen concept, very high in plant density, but low in fish stocking, and very small fish.
Beautiful tank, but I'm not capable of that kind of attention to detail. I'd like to, but not in my wheelhouse (ADHD).
Is this JDM or not?
If not what is the true meaning of JDM?
Japanese Domestic Market. Like the tanks of live fish sold for consumption that you see in Asian markets, packed in wall to wall.

I’ll admit to overstocking…but at least the fish I keep aren’t bigger than the dang tank!

Being a mostly "new world " cichlid keeper, that concept would not be realistic for me.
Most of my an average 6 ft tanks only hold one pair of cichlids per tank, and maybe some dithers.
I typically only breed cichlids at smaller sizes in 75’s divided. Then after I inevitably move the males to communities and sell the females.
As long as I stick to one representative per genus I’ve had no issues. I have been able to maintain a breeding pair of Bifas in said communities which works well as I don’t grow out fry.
But like anything else to each their own!

No offence but ...that's all?
I expected a few paragraphs at the very least.

Expensive, one off fish. Platinum, albino this and that, over priced plecos, things that are more on the rare side that command a high price. The ''baller'' is going to let you know.

The welcome page to MKF besides being about big tanks and big fish, described members who "spared no expense". Of course, that whole original welcome page was quietly removed, most like by the current regime. Frankly, I miss seeing pictures of that tank with the beautiful platinum and gold barramundi, and I REALLY miss threads like this one:

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter is one of the few big tank people left on MFK. I'm glad he is still sticking around.

I joined MFK as a newbie with questions on filtering our 300 gallon tank. Over the years I gleaned a lot of stuff browsing MFK. Durso, Herbie and Bean Animal plumbing were introduced here by members who had browsed Reef Central. I read about Momotaro Bakki House showers. I read about Clarity freshwater protein skimmers, and I also liked ApacheDan's thread about his fiberglass tank with a window. What other fish forums have discussions on Ultima II filters? Discussions on big tank filtration is what made MFK unique to me.

Yes, I saw the tanks chock full of fish, but to each his own. I can think of one member with a lot of fish and a lot of big tanks who was a regular until fairly recently. He was probably flamed and shamed off this forum. Yes, he was probably showing off his fish, but isn't that what this forum is for? Time and time again I have seen posts where a member proudly shows pics of his tank and is quickly shot down with downer "helpful" comments. Unless advice or critiques are asked for, keep your negative comments to yourselves, they are NOT helpful. "I hate bare floor tanks, they are ugly" is not an appropriate response to some one who has proudly displayed their bare floor tank for everyone to see. There are too many Negative Nancy, Debbie Downers on MFK now. If you can't write something positive, just move on. Oh, I know, your snow white pure consciences won't allow you to leave anything alone. The negativity on MFK is REALLY awful. In the good old days of MFK nobody put anybody down. I am afraid I liked the old MFK better, even with threads with pictures of tanks chock full of fish or pictures of beautiful fish that I will never keep.

Regime? What in the world. How I saw it was that the insane stocking was frowned upon as the knowledge of water chemistry and its effects on fish. Larger tanks are less common as costs of living go up, people move on in life etc. Discussion is less because monster fishkeeping is down, just evolution of the forum.
