I don't disagree that everyone should atleast get a high school diploma or GED, i'm just sharing my knowledge of the work force and my own personal experience doing interviews (I doubt Jcpenney's qualifyes as a small business?) Short and simple, you CAN get somewhere without completing HS.

I also mentioned that illegal immigrants are able to successfully earn a living for themselves and their family here also...without citizenship, high school diploma or a GED. All jobs will list what qualifications are needed to be hired and if it's not covered in the application, it'll work it's way into the interview. Just saying all hope is not lost

I'm not trying to say life is like the guy who supposebly started off with a cell phone on craigslist and ended up working his way all the way up to a ferrari....or the bum on the street corner that makes 85k a year and other stupid urban legends. Just that there's options out there

While they generally do find work, most aliens don't find stable consistent work that I would call "successfully earning a living for themselves and their family". LBF should try to do the GED though, as he has plenty of free time to do so.

I agree with the posts about getting your GED. Living with grandparents is a pain but it is your time to better yourself. Put up with it a little longer and actually get your GED!!!!!! Otherwise you could be living with them forever....well, they won't be around forever and then what will you do?

PS. i thought i'd made it clear that everyone should strive to open up doors by getting their GED or HS diploma but was just pointing out that it's possible to succeed without them

I think some can get by without it, but ballinouttacnrol is right in this situation. Everyone is different, but he needs to open as many doors as possible. Get that GED.

I think joining the army or armed forces would be a great learning experience for you LBF, you could learn a lot from there. If I was in your situation I would shoot for the airforce, and if you can't get in there go for the army.

my comment was only in regards to what I've seen and/or read in regards to the situation most illegal aliens are in...I never said there aren't any successful cases, as there are bound to be considering the total number of people that fall under that definition, but it still would be a small percentage of the overall number of illegal aliens that have been particularly successful...in many places, such as as FL they won't issue a FL ID or DL without a permanent resident card or employment authorization card.

Cant believe there is a debate on getting by with or without a GED...I dont know where you guys are from, but in Michigan (one of the worst economies) if you dont have a GED or HS diploma you are automatically out of the running for the job. Over qualified people are applying for jobs because they are out of work. In the real business world, even a Bachelors degree is becoming obsolete...now Masters are much more preferred.

Kid get your GED...its an accomplishment in and of itself.
