Juruense - Getting Off Live

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maximus, thanks for the info. Is dry krill their staple food? Is this all they have been eating for now? Do they eat it till their tummies are really bulging or just a little and then stop? Please share details how you got yours off live foods.

Chromobotia, thanks for the update. Useful info. I hear you about a jur in a comm tank. I've done this once too many times. Nobody's experience is all-encompassing but that of all of us together. Many write their smallish tigs and jurs take mascivore. Let's see what Maximus explains.

I started with guppys they both ate, bbut i had to sepetate couse of the one beating the heck out of the other one.so the beat up one i put in my 90gal grow out tank. The fish i have in that tank, silver arow and arapaima do not eat live. This tank was the only other tank i had at the time. I honestly didnt think this onr would make it he was beatin bad. So after a week of healing i tryed feeding every tbing except live. He got super thin didnt think he would make it,one day i was feeding my pima some krill and the next thing i new he had grabbed a piece. He stuffs him self every other day now. The other grow out tank with the other one kinda the same thing but wasnt thin. Ill write more later im off break

Ok,the other jur in my 55gal,i feed him guppys till i got 2 baby dats and a blond ck. Mind u at this time he was and still is a chubber... When i got the other fish i got 4 dozen guppys for the dats and ck. With in a day between the cat, dats and the ck they wiped out the guppys. So for the heck of it i tryed pellits on the dats and ck. They ate pellits. That friday i was going to go get guppys but somthing came up ,so i tryed krill on them. The lights were out for a good 3 hours i put krill in there and the ck was the first to take it then the dats a few min later i seen the catfish eating it. I have crazy serculation in that tank. So the curant takes what ever floats including pellits krill whatever and brings it down. Im shure my jur in that tank eats pellits as well couse he is fat

I've never had time to maintain more than one tank so last weekend I decided it was time to get my Juru out of the Q-tank and into the main tank. With him in the main tank, I don't need to worry about any uneaten food spoiling in the tank, boy was that a pain as he refused to eat anything (pellets/frozen). Since I was able to get him to take some worms, I figured it would be ok to feed him those in the main tank as I refuse to put any feeder fish in my main tank.

I'm a bit nervous/cautious of him being in the main tank as it is definately harder to make sure he gets some food. Some of the worms have already been stolen by my other fish. I'm hoping that he'll be more likely to pick up on eating frozen/pellets as that is the main foods fed to this tank. I'll need to do my best in keeping an eye on him in there and do my best to target feed him until he picks up feeding on pellets.

We'll see how it goes.

Other fish eating in a tank is a significant factor. It often helps break a stubborn fish into taking unfamiliar foods - either out of comradely/"herd" instinct or jealousy/competition they go for it. I forgot about that. Thanks Maximus for a nice report and for reminding.

It's easier to get juvs of any kind off live in a smaller tank than a big tank just my experience. They are able to locate and see the food easier.

I've hit him in the head with pellets....he just refuses to eat them.

It seems to me that mine is in hunting mode and doesn't realize that he just needs to go get it, that the hard part has already been done for him. I've thrown a worm right next to him and watched him size it up waiting for the right time to strike only to have another fish steal it right from under him.

I'm hoping that he'll join the other fish during feeding time...hasn't happened yet. He just hangs out in one corner of the tank near some drift wood. It's like he's waiting for his prey to come on by.

An Update since I've had the fish for a year now.

The only thing I've gotten him to eat are worms. No other foods that I've presented have been taken. I'm fine with him just taking the worms but I'm concerned about his size. He really hasn't grown much since I've gotten him, really an inch or two. He probably is about 6 inches in size right now.

It must be his diet that I'm feeding him. I probably should have left him in his Q-tank and just fed him live until he put on some size and them moved him into my big tank.

I'll file this experience under lessons learned.

Does he eat lots of worms? I always thought they were one of the most nutritious foods.

For the longest time, he was eating a good sized worm every 3 days or twice a week. These days it seems like I can only get him to eat 1 worm a week.

I have no idea how nutritious they are for a catfish but I thought they would be better than guppies or goldfish.
