Just bought guppies, how do I breed them

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a large glass bowl, heavily planted (swords, java, duck weed, etc) with a betta, one male guppy and 3 females. Guppies eat plants and breed, betta eats fry, plants photosynthesize. Awesome little ecosphere. Set one up for my girl and my nieces too. Fun project and good lesson on the food chain!

awesome idea,........... so you never have to feed the betta nor the guppies ever??? Where can I get swords, java and duck weed? And what other if possible will be good for guppies to eat?? do tell, very interested in trying :grinno:

Is there many specific signs that a guppy is preg. other then a big black dot?

My LFS sold me 3 females today. She said one of them seems to be preg. already. And also warned me about their "Spawning" rate. I told her I understood, and took them home. After an hour. My male Guppy chased the new females all around, and one of them died. >< I suppose she was weak, she was sucked into my Emp. 400. [Going to get my refunds tommorow]

Well I would need to know, so I can seperate the mom and put her into a breeding net inside the tank. Before the fry gets sucked up or eatten.

Just assume they are and you will be correct. :D

The only question is how soon they are due. How fat they get does seem to depend on how well fed they are, so it's hard to give any exact advise. If food is scarce they still drop fry, but smaller batches, and they dont get really fat. If they are well fed then they blow up untill they look like a fat grape with fins :D

If you have several females, pick out the fattest one, it will probably be closest to spawning.

Cheers

Wow, this thread has made me want to breed guppies too lol.

Any idea how many guppies I could have in a 50 gallon tank? I don't have the option of a grow out tank, so I basically plan to have lots of hiding spots (any suggestions for plants that grow easily - I dont have much luck with them, except floating plants).

How long would it take for the babies to grow to near adult size?

If I started out with say 12 guppies, 9 female, 3 male, how long would it take to have a swarm of guppies like I saw in the picture of this thread?

Many thanks everyone.

How long would it take for the babies to grow to near adult size? Depends on water quality, what they eat, temp, etc but roughly 3 months, less under the best conditions.

Many thanks everyone.
