Just got some Butterflies!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had the butterflies for almost a week now. He just passed away this morning. I'm down to one, but fortunately, he is not having any trouble eating. I'm wondering if the other butterfly wouldn't eat because of him. He (the only one alive) was always flaring at the others whenever he saw them.
I'm still going to keep an eye out for any more butterflies in the future. Or maybe get some more bichirs...

They eat large flakes as well as small crickets even little guppies. They have the cool hinged jaw like the aro. I had one of these guys for a good 6 months. Then my gar ate him the other night.

When the 2nd one died, I opened his mouth (just to see what it was like) and he had a tongue! I never knew that Butterfly fish had tongues! Just thought that was pretty cool.

I've (finally) decided on a name for my last remaining Butterfly. His name will be Mopperig, which is (I think) Dutch for Grumpy. He always looks grumpy and never really moves unless there is food or one of the senegals bump into him. He kinda chases them away (not like they wanted to stay there anyway) and then goes back to being grumpy:ROFL:

Mine eats tetra crisps... lol. He basically eats anythign that will stay at the surface though. I made sure when I bought mine though that he would eat pellets/flakes.

inactive fish but they are cool looking and stay at the water column most fish don't bother in. so they don't really take up any space and there bioload is pretty minimal.

Remember butterflies don 't get that big about 6" so they shouldn't be housed with other large predatory fish like bichirs,& gars 2 or 3 times there size it's just asking for them to be eaten. Also they are not to boisterous/aggressive so need rather peaceful tankmates too. Keep hope alive & you'll find some more. The 2 probaly were stressed when purchased, which for butterflies can lead to death.

one thing to mention is make sure the crickets or wat ever ur feeding lands right in front of it or it wont see it.

I thought they only got to be 4"... do they really get to be 6" long? That would be nice:drool:
I'm pretty sure the first one died of internal damge, because his stomack area was all red. The second one probably died of stress though. He never ate anything I put in the tank. Not even crickets!
Mopperig, however, eats anything that floats!
