Just got some Butterflies!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I've never really liked getting my fish from Wal-mart, but when they're the only ones who are carrying Butterfly fish, I figured I might as well take my chances!

I just picked up 2 more butterflies from Walmart.
They seem a little more lively than the ones I got before. They kept trying to jump out of whatever container they were in!
I thought the butterfly fish would be one of those "Walmart-buys-them-once-or-twice-for-variety" kind of fish .Turns out that they are selling very well for Walmart:naughty:
One of the butterflies has already consumed 2 crickets, so I'm hoping that these won't pass away like the other 2 did. I'm so excited though!

They have been eating very well since I got them, so I think I won't be losing either of them. Whew!

congrats on re-establishing your trio of butterflies. i see them all the time at my lfs and i think they have a pretty interesting look to them. just a bit to boring for my tastes.

Well, mine just sit there most of the time, unless there's food! It's pretty cool to see them open their hing-like mouth to eat a cricket!
Even though mine aren't as active as my other fish, I do love them and I'm very glad I got them.

Grats on the butterflies man. I loved the one I had in an old community tank I had ot get rid of years and years ago. Just an FYI not only cover the tank. Make sure there are no holes anywhere. I had the same one jump out 2X before I sealed everything as good as I could. Lol the one time was at night and it actually landed on my bed and woke me up. I was like wtf!!!!!! I mostly fed mine small crickets and floating pellets.

Well, my fish are going a little crazy! My Gambusia just had babies today, so everybody is trying to find a way into the net breeder! The only fish I've ever had that was smart enough to find a way into the "baby holder" was a dojo loach. I hope nobody else gets that smart!
The babies will be going into a 20g ,for those of you who were worried that I'd grow them out it in the net breeder.;)
But this is the only time (besides feeding time) that they are REALLY active. They're on hunting mode!

I have been trying to find out how to sex butterfly fish and (after a lot of cruisin' the internet) I found out how. Turns out all 3 of my butterflies are males. Why does that always happen?
Anyway, I was at Walmart today and they happened to have 5 butterflies... all females.
So, I picked up 2 of the little ladies and one of them has already downed a cricket!

I guess the males are happy with my selection. The biggest male goes around "flaring" at all the other Butterflies - mostly the ladies.
It's funny though. They don't actually flare like a betta would. He'll point one fin (the fin facing the other butterfly) down and the opposite one up while extending all his other fins and kind of wag his body sideways. It's so funny to watch! It would be pretty awesome if I could get them to breed. Interesting to see how butterfly fish develop... Hmm...

I'm so happy! My butterflies are now taking bugs from my fingers! Fortunately, their mouths are a little bit too small to fit around my fingers. It's exciting though!
