Hi,

I often wonder just how secure a fish tank really is. When I look at a glass tank, I realize that only silicone and plastic trim are holding it together. Then I think about the water weight/pressure. So it starts to make me feel kinda nervous. Especially with big tanks, the risk is higher. And I have read some threads on MFK about some people having their tanks fail and wound up flooding their room. This kinda scenerio is scary to me.

Some times in the night when I hear a little noise I get worried and get up and check everything out. I guess I'd like to hear what others have to say on this matter. To me this has got to be every aquarists worse nightmare.

Also, what about tank stands? How do you know if its strong enough, or if its failing? Thanks

Tanks do fail on occasion. I've had only one leaker over the years and it was my fault. I just make sure my homeowner's insurance covers damage from a tank busting and sleep like a baby.

Of course, but after time a stand could give out. Someone could build a stand and it will hold initially, but since its not strong enough it will give way sooner or later. So saying if it holds, its good, is not a correct answer. And about the tanks, I jsut want opinions on how secure they really are. I mean, if you think tanks are invincable then you are foolish. Remember, its glue and plastic holding glass thats under pressure by tremendous amount of weight. So asking a question like this isnt paranoid.

NO. its just gonna make the stand stronger because of the mass weight its gonna get everything to lock in tighter and therefore become more secure

if they were that bad they wouldnt be made.....they are fine....silicone is much stronger than you think

did you know theres HUGE chunks of metal flying over yer house 24 hours a day just waiting to come crashing down and explode you to bits... and that the very earth on which you live is just wizzing around space with billions of way bigger rocks just waiting to crash into us and smush us all... and that if you sneeze while eating a spoonful of icecream you could stab yourself in the brain.....

comeon meow.. theres bigger things to worry about

I have only used tanks and have had no problems. Some are set up now for 15 years and who knows how old they were when I bought them. The only problems I have are with filters sometimes leaking from worn seals or cracked parts (I hate plastic).
