Just to get some mouths drooling...

I have to agree with piggy67 to a certain extent. There should be some compromise that only gives responsible and proper keepers access to Herps of every kind in the future, instead of some of the fools that come along the pet store, grab a herp and go home. Those should not be given ANY access at all, which effectively blocks off their education routes into herp keeping for quite a while, which is a necessary side-effect.

Ok, let me make this easy. We are not talking about DOGS/WHITE SHARKS or PACU. This thread is about KOMOTO'S. They are NOT pets and should not be kept as such. The only reason a person would want a komoto is to show it off and brag(until someone looses an eye). You have to have a permit just to visit Komoto and they dont just hand them out for obvious reasons. 99.9 % of the world population cannot properly care for a KOMOTO ...This is my .02, it may not be worth much but it is my opinion..

Its all relevant! If water monitors and croc monitors are legal, why aren't komodos? If the reason is "just because" ...thats no logic for banning something. Big snakes are banned or regulated because a few people get killed a year from their own, or someone around them being an irresponsible keeper. Yet dogs remain legal causing more deaths, accompanied by overpopulation and that mess. No one would get a komodo to put it on a leash and show it off...if they were legal for the private sector they would surely require permitting accompanied by huge costs.

I take it you don't like reptiles
do you understand that reptiles are very laid back and adaptable
do you realize that it is easier to keep a 6ft lizard then a bullmastiff IMO
lizards are predictable, all they want is heat, humidity and food
if you provide all of those plus space and light you have a happy and likely tame lizard
and your forgetting about the difference of an animal being captivity vs the wild
in captivity the lizard has no competetion no predators nothing so they have no need to be aggressive or competitive or fearful
but throw a dog into the wild Id give it a week before the wild comes out in them

btw its komodo not komoto

Exactly. I am not saying that they should go without regulation- I am all for getting a permit system in place, but the permit needs to be accessible to those who show interest and are responsible enough to do it.

anyways, this thread has gotten out of hand so I am just going to agree to disagree. I have stated my opinion on it so take it for what it is worth (or not).

I understand and I am sorry for getting so heated about this I just feel strongly that qualified individuals should be able to keep any pet they want as long as it is done responsibly.

And thank you.

Thats my whole point, theres simply too many irresponsible ppl out there to allow such an animal to be sold as a pet..even someone with a proper permit/proper care facilities may be tempted by the astronomically high price they would be worth in the trade. The temtation would be wayyyy too much for most ppl...and then....well, we all know what happens then...:nilly:

very true, I wish it were like that here
but instead any snake over 3m is banned
and all exotics need to be liscensed and regualted
they are even going as far as hamsters

I do have reptiles, i know exactly what they do and how to care for them. If you think just because your reptile has no predators they can be handled like a dog then by all means go ahead and pet your monitor. Sorry i dont do spell check but thanks for the spelling lesson.

Chris, i apologize for derailing your thread. I just wanted to add my .02 about keeping this spactacular animal. Again i apologize...sorry dude..
