Not a newb by any means, just wondering everyones opinion on water changes, do large water changes hurt your beneficial bacteria.

50% changes are safe if needed,30% is better as far as what i know.that 240g was to heavy so i just bought the second biggest tank he had didnt have much time to decide 140g well do just fine tho thanks for your help enyways bc all post pics of new setup when i get a digital cam..

ive done 70% many times before never lost a fish from a water change

I've personally never had a problem w/ 50% or less WC's and my BB system. personally I'm more worried about PH fluxs from such large water changes, and water Chemistry in general then my BB which is mainly in my filteration. imo depending on what filtration set-up you have would depend on how much water you can safely change out at once. I have learned doing a massive WC and Changeing filter media is a bad idea, rarely I've had a major spike doing this.. but I have always seen somewhat of a spike. So now I avoid it if at all possible. I have 1 tank i do 25%-50% 2x's a week and never had an issue.

simple and short answer is no. filters hold sufficient bacteria to run a tank without and ammonia spikes. discuss owners make 100% water changes daily (most of them). making large water changes is no big deal imo

yes true depending on how hardy the fish are.now dont be giving that kind of info to a person that has angel fish or other sensitive fish like that, for hardy predators on the other hand is another story so make sure you tell the op what fish can handle 100% wc because you miss informing him or any other people is putting there fish at risk. smartlove

i mentioned discuss keepers..which means discuss fish right..

actually the large water changes are for fish that extremely sensitive like discuss must have exceptional water, therefore some discuss owners change water daily.

personally i change about 20-25% water weekly, and about once a month i do a really good gravel vac and change more like 50% and sometimes more depending on how close i'm paying attention to the water level and i've never had a problem at all, the reason behind this post was because of a topic that arose on another post and instead of going of the subject on that post i figured i'd post a new one.
