just wondering, water changes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
beneficial bacteria doesn't colonize the water, it grows in and on surfaces..... so i don't see a problem with doing large water changes..

i do 50% w/cs a week on my tanks..no problems here..

I do 50% 2 times per week on my discus tank. never had any problems, but I would have if I not do it. Im power feeding them with beefheart three times a day. Most discus tanks produce a lot of waste.

Water is not bad for beneficial bacteria…

Therefore fresh water is not bad for beneficial bacteria…

Doing 100% water changes every hour is not bad for beneficial bacteria…

Chlorine is bad for beneficial bacteria, and improperly dechlorinating a tank during a water change can put the beneficial bacteria at risk…

The risk is not in adding fresh water… it’s in your water not being only fresh water… ;)

i do 50% every 2 days and the days inbetween it sometimes gets around 10% as i vac out all the ray poop.

i use hma filterd water which i store in 5 120ltr drums linked together in my backyard.
50% WC takes me around 30 mins.

tank temp drops from 28c to around 26 at the moment, will drop abit more as the water im adding will get colder as we get into winter.

tested my water today as im keeping an eye on it with the new ray added.
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate is between 0 to 5

water is so good im takeing a sample to my lfs tomorrow for a second test to make sure my test kit is ok!
nitrate used to come out the tap at 10! so fook knows whats going on

lol rereading my post i realize that i should clarify i meant to post
when i moved my 40 gallon planted tank, i did a 90% water change so i could move it, the fish got very stressed out, simply because the water level was so low but once it was filled, there were no problems, and there were no losses

Large water changes give risk to major Ph fluctuations, and that is the worse thing you can do to the fish, in the name of good water...25-50% weekly is to err on the safe side...check your parameters before and after to be sure...

People doing large WC's probably stage the water first in another container, bringing it to needed parameters before adding it to the main tank.

If you're doing large WC's with out this, then there is the risk of hurting everything in the tank, depending on how careful you are with matching dechlor and PH control in relation to the added water.

Plain tap water kills BB. So just adding tap water will set back your bio filtering a bit. This effect is lessened depending on how much tank water is left to dilute this effect, chems added, ect.

I do 90% and 50% wc on my discus tank once a week. I have no deaths yet and all my discus are happy and healthy looking :)
