just wondering, water changes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How concentrated to you believe the chlorine in your tap water is? We are discussing chlorinated tap water, not straight bleach…

Opinions based on gross exaggerations such as the one you are currently promoting causes people to take many unnecessary steps making fish keeping far more difficult than it needs to be…

As I said previously… not every water department treats their water the same. In some areas greater precautions may need to be made… Any of us can call the water department and find out what is in our water and in what quantities. Then we can treat for our actual situation as opposed to the fictional situation born out of Spiff’s speculation…

Let's see..

My talk of "tap water" by your definitions is now full bleach. Yes, that is what I meant. Wow, your logic is astounding.

I say tap water is basically harmful to the tank because 99% of the times it is, but because of that 1%, you jump in with your "Completely Untrue!" statement.

And of course, you spout everything as fact, when the fact is you're dealing with a slow drip lobotomy.

well i personally would not take the risk and i dont really care how much harder it makes it.
i want to protect my fish so i do everything as well as i can.

i never take risks, nothing is an unnecessary step to me to do the job properly.

even if i had water with an acceptable level clorine init ide still do what i do now.
i use a HMA filter and change the cartriges regulary.

funny how some ppl come on forums like this and use huge long statements to show others up and try to make them selves look better then everyone else.

im not that intelligent but i dont need to be little ppl to make my self look good.

and i do a DAM good job of taking care of my fish.

Who are you talking about ? And what does "But I dont need to be little ppl to make my self look good" mean?

I think he means "belittle people"...

I have been adding tap water to my tank, then a slug of dechlorinator for good measure. My city water is chlorinated only no chlorimines...

My fish grow fast and massive, ask anybody who's been around my tanks.
I haven't nuked my BB yet.

I do shut down the pump because I have to, 33% is below the level of my overflows...

W/C's arn't that hard to figure out guys...work the numbers of dilution.
Everybody does what works for them...If you constantly get spikes, you're F'n up something, change your ways, period.

Fresh tap water with chlorine is used in some fishkeepers W/C's and top offs without any undue stress to the filtration or fish...
They know that the chlorine, will gas off fast enough to not be harmful...

This whole thing started when I suggested it is not true that “tap water kills bacteria”…

There are thousands of us here at MFK, and tens of thousands beyond MFK, that add tap water & dechlorinator directly to the tank and our bacteria do not all die in doing so.

Based on that fact, not opinion, it is obvious that “tap water kills bacteria” is a false, or at the very least exaggerated, statement.

To tell people that chlorine and/or chloramine kill bacteria, is a fact. To point out that most if not all city water contains chlorine and/or chloramine is very helpful. It is also helpful to mention that tap water contains varying amounts of chlorine and/or chloramine and in most cases it is in small enough quantities to require using a dechlorinator, but dosing the tank as tap water is added is generally safe.

Suggesting people determine the quantity of chlorine and/or chloramine they are dealing with is suggesting people arm themselves with fact as opposed to relying on internet speculation.

But saying things like “tap water kills bacteria” alone is a misleading statement.

I do not come here to belittle people, I come here to help people have a better understanding of what’s going on in their tanks, and I take the time to share ‘the long version’. If someone else misleads readers with a faulty summary, I’m not afraid to point it out. I don’t do this to belittle the author, I do it to ‘protect’ the readers from the misleading post…

I understand that this makes authors of speculative, assumptions or inaccurate summaries feel belittled and I’m fine with that. My suggestion is to not make speculative, assumptions or overly summarized posts. If you do not have the knowledge or the time to give someone a full answer, leave it alone and someone who does will…

it seems to me the statement tap water kills bb may be may be alittle much but that most people would understand that it was meant that the chemicals in the water is what could harm the bb dont really think its necessary to micro analyze that statement

Oh I get it I cant believe it took me that long to understand that.
. Just keep it simple really.... If you check your params enough you will know your doing something wrong. If your fish have symptoms your probably doing something VERY wrong. I pump the water in my tank and mix in the tank with filters running (Besides the ac110 it wont siphon that low) No bio crash as a result... but everyone has different water so its good to be informed. Id prefer to mix mine outside the tank but that project is on the wayside at the moment as it is not that big of a deal I got more pressing things to take care of in the tanks.

I post as if I'm talking to people that are intelligent enough to understand things... and I choose not to dumb things down for people...

I didn't micro analyze the statement... I pointed out that is was overly simplified to the point of no longer being accurate... and I offered the accurate version...
