k1 kaldness

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My media chamber is lower than the mechanical chamber so it waterfalls into the k1 and starts the churn. Airstone across the exit of the chamber pushes the k1 up and back toward the front, completing the cycle. The only time the media tries to get into another chamber is when I turn off the pump and the overflows drain back into the sump. This raises the overal chamber levels so they intermix. I use crosstich screen to keep the k1 from invading other chambers during water changes. Soon as pump is back on everything returns to normal.

iu bought an alita, i'll look into the jehmco large diaphram ones for my next one. where did you buy yours from mike?

I bought mine from Jehmco. I use the DAPMH40 for my 40g FBF. I also opted for a PVC skeleton to disperse bubbles instead of air stones. Its a little on the loud side, but works like a charm.

where did you get the screen from?

I use plastic mesh from a a craft store to keep my media where it belongs.

i'll have to look into it for my next tank. i really learned that moving bed filter is the way to go if you have the money. since the moving bed media is alot cheaper than it was before it seems to be a good time to finally switch to it. as for the plastic mesh, do you have a picture i can get a reference for?

K1 will float until it's cycled then becomes neutrally buoyant

you are correct. i am not worried as my fx6 should be doing its job right now filtering it out. though i find that 200 micron is too pourus for my filter sock. i need a better polisher.

I'd put it in with the drain, filter sock should save you from it getting too nasty, the pump would produce some heat that might not be ideal. I wouldn't put it in with the K1 because it would be super annoying to look for, and if you don't have a heater controller it would be difficult to be sure it's not stuck on/off. I'd also cover the sump, for evaporation type deal.
