sounds a bit like my house, there is one of those horrible plug in air fresheners in just about every room, i'm continually switching them off....i hate the stuff.

A few summers back my friend and I were visiting a couple that had a herp/snake collection to rival my local zoo. I babysat their giant albino boa (I don't remember what she was exactly) in the bathtub while she was soaking. They had one of those auto plug ins that had to have been set to go off like every seven minutes or so. the first time I heard it I FREAKED OUT. I was terrified that there was some other snake loose in the room and was imagining all sorts of horrible nightmare scenarios. They owned several large/venemous/aggressive reptiles and I didn't know what it was or where it was.

On topic though, I haven't had anything like that happen with an aquarium before, but I did come home from work one day to find my snakes terrarium partway open, with an unwound wire hanger sticking out of it. My snake was nowhere to be seen. I started freaking out.
It turned out he had just decided to hide underneath his water dish (it took me about an hour to coax him out). I confronted my sister (she was my roommate at the time) because well, it HAD to have been her. She ended up telling me that a guy that she had a crush on had brought his two year old over to visit, and they thought it would be cool to show her. She had tried to take it out, but ended up getting scared that it might bite her so she used the hanger to pick him up partway so the little girl could see it.

I nearly killed her.

Well said and a good consolation for having my tanks down in the basement,no guests have any business down there unless they are invited.

wish i had a basement lol would make things so much easier and i could have bigger tanks :)

Back in the day I had a Colombian boa that I raised up to a solid 8ft. One of my brothers friends tried to feed it a pizza crust when I wasn't around.

"stupidity, that which even the Gods struggle against in vain"...

Wow, the "Who not to trust" Thread! lol. I'm still new to the game and haven't had anything overly traumatic happen. But my mom, who I'm trying to train to be the sitter, was fish-sitting when I went to MDA Summer Camp for a week with one of the kids I PCA for. I was going to be out of contact, as they take your phone and keys when you get there and I never had the chance to go check them out. I left a friend's phone number taped to the tank in case anything should happen and told her all she had to do was drop a couple pellets in the tank on Wed (even showed her how many) and check on them once a day. Nothing stressful.

When I got back, she said that she felt bad for them begging at the top of the tank and fed them Tue and Wed and then couldn't bear to watch them beg so she never went in my room again for the rest of the week. lol. Not a big deal as it was only a week, but I'm afraid of what will happen if I'm ever away for months at a time!

After this thread I might put a lock on my tanks :)

My friends understand to not mess with my tanks, especially the tank with a crayfish :)

And since I'm setting up a 75 gallon FOWLR with a lionfish, it's up to them if they want to put their arm in the tankard pet the lionfish.

Most of my friends are scared of my 18" bearded dragon.

I'm not friends with dumbass kids or people. I have parties all the time and my dovii is a big crowd pleaser. I tell everyone to look at his teeth and if they open the top he will bite a chunk out of you. I don't really care if people let my fish chase their fingers or whatever.

Well the worst that happened to me was when my dad tried to help me with Co2 needle valve settings, after seeing me struggle with it for a while he adjusted it to get nice bubbles going when I was out to college and I came back home to 80 cardinals , 20 congo tetras and 50+rummy nose, 6 large roseline barbs all dead and floating .

I had collected most of the plants from other hobbyists by doing odds and end , doing thier diy projects , selling ferts/ filters. etc

The fish alone took me a loong time to save up/ beg /recieve in gifts from others.

The ph had crashed to something like 4.
Well we didn't speak for over a year and he still hates all my tanks

Most of my friends have tanks of their own. So they know what to do around them. The ones who dont.... well I just laugh and say if your dumb enought to put your hand in my tank Im not paying for your medical bill... Then they put a hand over the tank, all the fish come up and they dont go near it again. Also my friends are respectfull enough and have common sense so they dont try to feed the tank or n e thing. Most of them like to fish and like nature.

Wow I feel lucky I've never had problems like what you all talk about. Any friends I ever had over have been deeply respectful of my property and animals. The worst I ever had was when I had to go out of state for a week. Came back to a tank filthy, and over-fed bloated Sarasa Comets. I had to put them on a diet for over a week just to get them healthy and the mess in the tank was a nightmare. I'm still a nervous wreck when I have to go out of state. I've been training up the person who looks after my tank and educating them. It's frustrating though how people will stupidly feed a fish every time it "Looks hungry".

Yeah, I've done the whole training and educating routine with a select few family members who seem to get it. When I need to take off for a little while, I'll pre pack and organize small cups of frozen and dry food with lids set aside in specifically marked containers and very specific instructions. Never had a problem yet.
