They're creek chub...all of them from the looks of it. They're fun fish to keep, veracious appetites and they reach a decent size, 10-12". The thing with minnow traps is that they seem to catch a lot of a select few fish. Quantity over diversity. If you want some of the more glamorous natives your best bet is to get in the water.

Creek Chubs??? im not doubting your ID its just that most of the chubs i catch are not nearly that nice lookin or i would have kept a few :WHOA:. also kinda on the subject..did you ever catch a darter in one of those traps???. Oh and bone up on your darters by the way, some guy had questions about them and i sent him to see you LOL

My reply wasen't directed to you so that's probably why it wasn't helpful. I was posting as a response to the OP or the membership in general. Your question seemed to be directed towards the OP specifically so I didn't answer it. To answer your question though I use a regular wire minnow trap from Wal-Mart baited with dry dog or cat food and I've also used chicken with success. With those I've caught bluntnose and fathead minnows, golden shiners, bluegill, pumpkinseeds, creek chubs and a few other species I cannot recall at the moment.

This might help you and others when baiting your traps.

And bread as bait.

They are pretty boring now, essentially, the selected four I have now are my test fish to put it in best terms. I want to see their progress for the week and see what needs to be done.
Right now my tank is boring, some gravel and a cut out log for them to hide. Which is what they are doing, towards the bottom of the tank and inside the log.
Now much activity at all. Just lay there. Probably because they have never witnessed an aquarium or the human hand. I could fish them out by hand in the tank, not even scared.
My only concern now is feeding. I know these guys hide a lot and only swim in bunches, and eat anything. But since they never had handed food before, I am puzzled on what to feed them.

Perhaps you're catching a different kind of chub? I'm certain those are creek chubs that the OP caught. As for darters, I've never caught one in a minnow trap but I don't really live in a darter rich area plus they don't usually venture into minnow traps anyway, I would gather that most of them found in traps got in them by accident.

The only time I caught darters in a minnow trap was in a trap placed in about 6" of water on a shallow ledge surrounding a deep pool beneath a culvert outflow. The trap was full of big fantail darters. I think the combination of the narrow ledge and sunfish-filled pool funnelled the darters into the trap. Additional traps in other parts of the stream yielded plenty of minnows but no darters.

So, I took out the two big fatheads, and just kept two small ones.
I set another trap at a different location (more rocky area) and will check tomorrow.

Ive never done any trapping north of Oklahoma but here in Texas I always use raw shrimp / prawns as bait. Just mash them a little so the oil starts to flow and throw them in. Youll attract all kinds of stuff. Its a little cold now for it but we also use minnow seins around the edges of the big lakes. Catch all kinds of oddball goodies.

Just came back in, only got 3 small and 3 medium's of the fatheads. I hope to get some shrimp today and use that as bait, maybe I'll attract something else.
And it is way too cold to go into the water, about 28degrees today!
