No, I live in Texas and don't need a heater (9 months a year). A chiller, on the other hand, I would need. No basements out here. The "chiller BS" is because most people have fish tanks in their house where it is a little warmer than 65*, usually.

It really sounds like dumb luck that your buddy's fish stayed alive for so long. In your setup, I know the Rio Grande will be ok at 70*, but it's pushing it on the low end for the other cichlids, and pushing it on the high end for the trout. If rainbows were fine at 68-70*, they would be all over the springs in central Texas because of stocking trial and error going back over 150 years, but they don't do well at all and thus there are no sustainable trout popultions around here.

Personally I wouldn't put all fish in the tank at risk on the off chance that this one will do ok, but it's your experiment.

My house is 78 right now and it's not even summer. Most people can't keep their tanks 65 without a chiller.
That doesn't seem like a real good story anyway. Your friend, who you just admitted isn't all there, claimed to have had them for several years, but as far as you know he hadn't had them that long, and then they died because of poor maintenance (you think). That's a lot of "Well my friend told me" and "I don't know for sure".

I think 70 is going to be a pretty poor long term temperature, so we'll see how it goes. I've tried cooler water fish out in warmer tanks where they did great for awhile and then just died. Warmer water natives seem to convert to cooler water better than coldwater natives convert to warmer water. Of course almost no ones house is gonna get super cold anyway.

Well................yea I guess if you live in a part of the country where its beaming hot then a chiller would be essential.

Then again......I live in New York.. I dont need a chiller, all I have to do is open window.

Yeah dude? What happened with the Trout? Is it still alive??? Did you eat it? If so, I hope it was with a beer..... Preferably i'd go with a Guiness Draught or a Killians Irish Red and mash potatoes.

it will be one week tommorrow and he is doing great eating color bits,cichlid gold and night crawlers, i will either have to fillet him and eat him before summer or put him in the basement were it stays cool. but ya i think hes doing just fine.

So if you wanna be be optimistic then we can look at it like this.... Either it makes it through the summer just fine in his basement, or it becomes a summer meal.

Well if you might eat him make sure you dont use any chemicals or medicines in your tank unless you have to.
Do you have much current in your tank? I hear they like lots of current and fish farms out here use strong current because it supposedly makes the fish stronger, healthier and meatier.
