Sorry, didn't have time to resize images. Not the two-footer I promised, but decent sized. HUGE mouth. About time too.

Whoops, too big. I would have put him in my tank, but he would have eaten everyone. He is now free in the canal.

Keep what you catch but don't release them back into the wild. They could carry diseases that are not present in the wild population.

Yeah, I know, but he was caring for a cloud of fry, and I didn't want to leave them without a father.

any suggestions for catching florida gar. I have a few of those too.

oh, don't know why pics were deleted, but they are in my gallery for whoever wants to see

IMO, you are better off attempting to cast net the gar. It is pretty easy to do with a little practice. You might have to clear a little debris if you don't have a flat bottom. Gar have narrow, hard mouths and I think you will put a nice hurting on it with hook and line. Maybe try a small minnow on a trout hook with the barb pushed flat. I don't know if they make circle hooks small enough but those would be great. This should also work for the various cichlids in there too. If they won't take live, try Berkley "Gulp" baits.

I agree with the cast net option for the gar.
You can't hook a gar like a normal fish, they have a really hard and bony mouth and the hook won't necessarily go in.
Most people that fish for gar either gig them, spear them, or snag them but you're not trying to hurt the fish you catch, so a cast net is probably the most humane option.
