In place of the lure, use a piece or cotton of fine nylon rope 2"-4" long. After attaching to your rig, comb out 3/4 of the rope. You can spray it with an artificial bait scent. The gar have very fine teeth and the combed rope will get caught in them, keep a constant pressure on the line when they strike and net them up.

Nothin' hurt and a perfect specimen.

wow :headbang2 you are the man never tried it but that sounds about right
 
wow great idea. But the gar here are way too big for my current tank. Smallest I saw was pushing two feet
