check the water there might be stress. i have had fish keep doing this and changing the water helps. does he also sometimes swim upsidedown or sideways.

i think if his fish was swimming upside down (excluding upside down catfish) he would be alot more worried about that than banging the lid of the tank.

my personal feeling is that this guy is just over zealous about eating... give him sinking pellets and see how he does... i have one red devil that would jump to the moon for a pellet.. he just loves to eat...

My rose queen and rd/midas do this all the time. They see the drops sticking to the inside of the glass tops (or a pellet stuck on there) and bang the tops to knock them off. Even my severum does this. It makes sense that after you fed him he calmed down.

I find it hard to believe that you would have that bad water quality to make a fish try to jump out of it!

agreed...he's probably just seeing something that looks like food and is trying to get it. I've personally never heard of a situation where the water quality is so bad that the fish try to jump to get out of it. Usually, when water quality gets bad the fish get very lethargic and are more likely to just hover at the bottom of the tank. :)

And fishkeeper25, I totally don't blame you for taking advantage of an LFS right beside your house that will test your water for free. I wouldn't spend the money on test kits if that were the case...the money could better be spent on food, water conditioner, etc. :) One thing though, if there ever is a situation where you think something might be wrong with the water and can't test it right away, there's never anything wrong with doing a water change right then and there. There's no such thing as too many water changes imoi. :headbang2

thanks alot evreyone im going and test my water as soon as the store opens just to make sure and no he dowsnt swim upsidedown lmaoooi woulda down a 70% waterchange if tht happend

Tie him to a rock with a shoelace, i bet he wont be jumping anymore.

By the way how far away is the place where you get your water tested?
maybe 5 min from my house by walk, and i feed him 2-3 times a day orelse he gets pissed and slams the windows when i pass by and i cant put a rock on my lid its a slanted lidso the roks just gunna slide off
