Making something banned does not neccesarily make things more expensive. If asian aros werent banned in the US it would be even MORE expensive than it is now becuase of the bigger demand for them. banning them from the US made them cost less except in US itself except i doubt anyone is willing to risk going to jail just to keep a few banned fish.
So are you suggesting they just lift the ban off drugs and let crackheads roam around free since theres still people smuggling it anyways?

There would also be a ton of supply so I'd have to agree with ashleysomething.

Are cigarettes and alcohol much better than a lot of drugs like marijuana? Not really but our government can make money from them so it's "ok", alcohol was once banned in the U.S. and what ashleysomething said was completely true in that instance. It is also true with abortion rights. Legalization will lead to the failure of black market profits and monetary benefit to our government; not to mention it will make the product safer and up to better standards.

How is there a ton of supply? asian aros are rare enough as it is now, unbanning them in the US wont be adding more to the supply but instead be adding to the demand. And please dont start with farms in the US again. Even though i dont smoke or drink, id rather smoke and drink than do crack or marijuana. Ever hear that story where some crackhead was so high he literally peeled off his whole face and fed it to his dog? I think screwed up lungs and liver would probably be better than that.

There will surely be more aggressive breeding if there was a bigger market, I'm sure the U.S. market would be huge. I don't do any drugs but I do understand that there are differences between them, and there are many. Not all of them are as harmful as crack and some of them are less harmful than cigarettes and alcohol. It really depends on the drug. Ever hear the story about that drunk who stepped in front of moving traffic and was run over? Wait, that was the news.

I do love drinking, but everything in moderation.

you guys should wait for more than 30 years before the farms have enough stock for your U.S. market. if the ban will be lifted now there will be no enough stock to supply the U.S. market thus leading to poaching of asian arowanas. if you dont know asian arowanas dont breed right away.

Hi everyone.
I just heard that if an asian aro is seen in the US illegally it is confiscated and killed. My question is why? If the entire reason they're not allowed here is because they're endangered than why kill it? Why not give it to a zoo, aquarium, or well known personal aquarist? It just doesnt make sense to me, what do ya'll think

not true :banhim::banhim::banhim:

Fair enough; I still don't see that as sufficient reason to restrict someone's freedom, but again- tragedy of the commons.
Could you please elaborate on this tragedy of the commons? I don't think I really get your point.
You are correct that people are willing to pay for cocaine; that said, however, it still leaves your claim entirely unsupported. How does bringing yet another personal freedom unjustly restricted by the government prove a priori that my argument is flawed? If anything, it supports it. I hate cocaine, don't get me wrong. The thing is, just because I hate it doesn't mean that someone who wants to do it (with their own time, body and money) should be forbidden to do it. Why would you accept the government dictating what is or isn't allowed to be put in your own body? I wouldn't even mention it, but you brought it up.
I can't really go that far into this conversation due to the restrictions on what we can talk about. I'll just say that smoking, drinking, and the sort affect everybody around a person, so that's why the government makes these laws. In the case of Asian Aros, it will affect people worldwide.
Again, I do. I vote, I write, and I share. Just as a point, shouldn't the rights of the individual come first? Sacrificing someone's right to property for the good of all sounds an awful lot like a very different form of government to me.
Excellent. I didn't mean give away your house and get out now, I meant that there are better ways to deal with this issue instead of complaining.
I just wanted to be clear on how I felt when someone told me to get out of my own country; I just hold that respect (for those like the members of your family) as very important to me. I do write letters, among other things; for instance, I am part of a grass roots organization supporting the continued seat held in the house by a champion of personal freedom, Ron Paul. Writing letters isn't the only way to spread the word- talking rationally to other people, for instance, is a great way to express your opinion and start to change things for the better.
Good point. Keep on writing letters and maybe one day they will change the law if the people in favor of legalization can convince them.

An excellent point that was made by a previous post was that if asian aros were legalized, poor people who couldn't afford to buy a farm full would catch them and sell them. This would hurt them even though they are endangered.

Even if they do try to breed more, they wont be able too...do you not understand the concept of asian aros DONT breed easily. if it takes a couple years to form ONE breeding pair out of a pond of 30, what makes you think they could make dozens and maybe hundred of more pairs in a small amount of time to supply the US market? As pressure_cooker said, wait 30 more years when they MIGHT have more to supply the world with.
