I think it should be understood that these attacks are rare. They don't have Komodo drills. The fact that this even got reported shows how very rare it is. It's similar to a surfer getting attacked by a shark or a hiker being bitten by a snake. Except those happen more often. You know these things can happen, but the rarity of these events and the inability to defend yourself from them means that life goes on unaffected. True, there are always precautions, but give the kid some slack. The odds of this were quite low.

:iagree: I don't think the kid decided oh hey let's ignore my toilet in my house and go crap in a bush in the komodo dragon pen. My guess is this is how they live their lives on a daily basis.

basically the way I feel about this is, is that it's life. Sometimes life sucks. It's not funny that a kid got eaten though. I guess over there you should tie all four of your kids to you when you go outside. Is it supposed to be funny because he was going to the bathroom. Would it be just as funny if he was walking through the bushes on his way to get the family some water from the creek??? It's not like he was at an amusement park for komodo dragons or something.

Lucho - good points, agian, and I honestly didn't do many stupid things :) My mother or grandparents were always there for me, making sure I stayed cool and out of danger. In such rural areas, you don't just run off on your own without expecting something like this.

Now authorities are going after the animal................

Santoury, I respect your position 99% of the time. The position you are defending in this thread, however, is absurdly selfcentered. By defending what you are defending you seem to think that everybody should live in accordance with US ( or other so called civilized places ) standards of living.

It may just be (i) that the reservation ( who spoke about Park? with all Parks entail? ) was created by the gov without any second thought to neighbouring villagers;

(ii) that the Dragon was looking for trash and therefore was in the vicinity of the poor kid's house?

(iii) that the kid was near the house...

Kids will be kids...the blame for this poor kid's death lies so much with his parents as the blame for a US kid dying by lost or stray bullets in a gang war in, say, Detroit. Are the american parents to blame for that?

Hey Miguel
I'm trying to focus on the lack of parental supervision more than anything at this point.
I don't think that this is an "USA" thing - I think that parental supervision should be prominent in ANY place at ALL times.

And in fact, yes, I think parents are to blame for putting children in the middle of a gunfight in Detroit. (And on to blame the authorities for allowing things like this to happen.)

Your concept of parental care is nearly inexistant in developing countries, Santoury. The parents are involved in providing for food ( in peacefull countries ) or in making ends meet ,and surviving, in confilct torn countries.

2 million children disappear in the world per year, 2/3 of that number in underdeveloped countries. Would you say that all this parents are negligent? No, they are taking care of things you tottally have for granted...and the price they pay ( and the price the the kids pay ) is surviving in dangerous places and bearing risks we simply do not imagine.

Some kids get shot inside their homes by stray bullets. Are the parents who have not had anti bullet windows in their homes negligent?

You have, I imagine, no kids, Santoury. If you had you would know the absolute impossibility of providing for assistance/guidance at all times, as you state....

haha! it seems it was ME who was stupid when kid :D, well I still are, less frequently I hope.

Miguel, I think the term "National Park" somewhat misdirected Santoury, the key is to know that not al National Parks are created equal... Here in Peru is normal for kids, teens and adults to get mauled/biten/eaten inside National Parks, it´s just that the natives are constantly exposed to the risks so it´s a matter of time.

Yes, like I said earlier, it's a way of life - being predated upon.

I think assigning blame is irrelevant here. The story wasn't "Boy takes a crap on Komodo nest." This is daily life. Did your parents go to the bathroom with you? How bout when you went camping? The boy went where he could to defecate. Just happened to be a Komodo there that day. Also, common sense doesn't help you much when you find yourself 5 feet away from a large predator. They can sneak up on you easy, it's what they do. They are big, fast, and indeed predatory.
