Kosovo thinks it is independent

I believe Wilson put it in his 14 points and since the world has tried to carve up countries up to keep people happy. In the 1930s a man went and tried to put his country back together, and the people let him for many reasons. It however did not ease the problems. The problem is that it has been set by the world that self determination is the way to solve conflicts in the world. Of course self determination is the problem. To give rights, you must take them away from someone else. The solution is just the beginning of another equation. The Serbs were once under the thumb of the Hungarians, and then WWI came.

The fact of the matter is that history has taught us that conflict will not end, the key is to keep as much peace as possible. OF course peace is determined by the person. We can be at war, but have peace at home. We can be at peace and yet others declare war on us. The answer is there is not peace, and rights are given up to a higher order in hopes to keep peace. Thomas Paine told us the only way to survive is to give up our rights.... otherwise a man can walk into your cave still your women, your food and your life if he so decides. Without the right to do that we are safe...

incase you are bored... Those same rights keep us safe to talk fish and have worries about what makes a man a man if he wears pink. Be happy you are here and not there...

so do you think that this will bring peace to the area or will it help the area settle or still be a melting pot for hatred.
i now people who went over as peacekeepers in the balkans they said all sides did terrible things which is usually the case.

This is not going to do anything for peace or stability, if anything this will inflame the region further. Republic srpska is already making direct moves to remove it's self from Bosnia and Herzegovina...Why not? if the Albanians can do it why have the Bosnian Serbs been denied the same?

It may also have unintended consequences elsewhere in the world. If Kosovo is recognized as a nation then you can pretty much guarantee it will be used as an example by separatist movements around the world..

China is not going to show anything like restraint to Taiwan though...

Everyone did crappy and horrible things.. There are no innocent parties to mess that was the Balkans civil wars...

It may cause other groups to do the same... The areas around it are the ones against... Russia and China are against it as well... May just strain relations...

beat me to it...

really I am not sure that it will make things horrible worse there, but it is another topic of the world to side about and use as an excuse to further their plans...

Think topics like Iran, China, Pakistan...

Is 'keeping the peace' in another part of the world for our own sake more important than another country's quest for equality and freedom?

I guess when America was fighting for independence you'd be reading the paper thinking "man we gotta stop those terrorists from separating".

Nothing is static in this world... nature, countries, politics, and borders are all dynamic. If people truly want something, you won't be able to stop it from happening.

Let Taiwan and Kosovo fight or crawl towards independence... call it NIMBY if you want, but western nations aren't the world police, and if anyone should understand the need to want freedom, the U.S. should.

...unless it affects them.

As a Serb I would like this bandithole called "Kosova" to be settled as it is a threat and has been a threat and issue to us for decades. How this issue is settled though is not through the Illegal annexation of a sovereign nations territorial rights. I understand the Albanians apprehension for the most part to remain part of Serbia (Us Serbs felt much the same about Croatia) but they have no right to annex parts of our nation. They have been given the legal option of autonomous governance within Serbia and as Part of Serbia. They refuse this and this is the issue.. We will not surrender Kosovo.

I still honestly do not even see how they call this independence.. The defacto government of "Kosova" are a UN/EU protectorate and have zero economy or infrastructure that is not run or paid for by someone else...I think about the most independent institution in Albanian "Kosova" is garbage collection....Someone else foots the bill for everything else...
