Twelve years after I started keeping Krobia xinguensis, they are now formally described, and I have spawned them for the first time. Better late than never? ?
Spawn #1 was a bit of a disaster. Only half the eggs hatched, so I siphoned out about 100 fry. I put them in a Ziss breeder box, inside a 40 breeder with some 1" Rocio spinosissima. Though I've never had an issue with these boxes, they proved no challenge to the small Rocio. They managed to suck the Krobia fry through the metal mesh in the sides of the breeder box. I ended up with only 7.
Two weeks later the pair spawned again, and this time I was able to save a ton of them.
This video was taken after their nightly dinner of newly hatched baby brine shrimp. You can see the fat bellies. About halfway through you get to see the juvies from the first spawn, and what a difference two weeks makes in terms of growth. The older ones are about twice the size at 1". You can also see at the end a bit of dominance display, where one of the larger juvies starts to show the characteristic black mask of Krobia as he turns on his threatening colors.
