large fish with oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Damn...hope I didn't start something, don't wanna hyjack this dude's thread. Thanks for the defence Miles, I honestly thought that an African/American mix was a bad idea...again, more because of food then because of water. I would however never do it anyway. I like to biotope when I can...at least with cichlids. I don't think Africans and oscars look good together. As for the water bit...makes a lot of sense...and I actually figured that it should not matter because the LFS water was not kept to the right specifications but I know a lot of die hard African keepers to would strangle me if I kept certain Africans in low pH soft water and fed them Hikari staple as opposed to Hikari Excel.

ok guys I thank you for all your input I do have a lot of info on what I can keep in the tank withv my oscar... what I was hoping for was something a little more exotic... I live in a college town so therefore it is harder to find some of the larger and expensive fish here and have never bought fish online and had them shipped and am not sure who to get them from what do you guys think of maybe a datnoid or a large gar... I know some of you believe that I need a 300 gal. tank in my defense i do water changes religiously keep the water in pristine condition... now get ready to gasp... I have raised this oscar in a 37 gal. to about 12 in. long (gasp) and my lfs was keeping one in a 29 for its entire life which I do not condone nor would I suggest... I am considering an orange pike please give me a better idea other than african chichlids as I am so bored of dealing with others cichlid tanks...

don't worry about my thread if you have learned something about cichlids or fishkeeping in general I am happy that I started it even if I haven't got too many ideas...

Well from what I learned to much protein in the diet of some Africans can cause problem with the intestines. They need more veggie based foods and it is harder to meet both fishes need when they are together. Sorry if I am wrong but it is just what I have been told and read. Also, these forums are for advice right? If I am wrong just say I am wrong you really don't have to be rude about it. I notice a lot of fishkeepers here on MFK are very cocky and rude to more novice fishkeepers. Kinda like wine snobs if you have ever met any you know what I mean. We were all new to the game at one point.

hes absoulutly right, alot of these fish need more veggies in their diet and sharing carnivorous food can be a problem, BUT!! their are species of carnivorous africans that can share the same diet as an oscar.
