large red devil pics anyone?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats a whole other part of it miguel, rapps dont live down there personally catching his fish... he has contacts who no doubt do their best but i bet they arnt snorkling about looking for full grown midas to poach their nests for wc's??? how do they know what they have? is it one in the red devil bag one in the midas?? lol....
f1's are probably a safer bet as you can catch nice full grown fish that look a stereo typical as possible... we want a fish that looks how we the consumer (not literally) want a midas to look...

I actually like this debate. Nobodys had a hissy fit yet. I think the only way it truly matters whether it's pure or not, or at least pure-ish, is for the people who know they want a specific look in their tanks. Like I said before, I wanted a fat, bulky orange fish, so I took the time to contact rapps and make sure I was getting a true Midas. (whether its 100% Midas, we will never know, but it's as close as you can get). However, if I wanted the same size fish, in a sleeker package, I would take the time to get a true rd. if just wanted a big orange fish that was cool to look at and had a bad attitude, then of course it wouldn't matter if it were midevil or not. The end result is a bad azz fish no matter which route you take. As for justarns concern on whether the blood lines are really that polluted, petco and petsmart took care of that

This my 12" male Red Devil. He was wild caught in Nicaragua. Sorry about the grainy shots, still working with a cheap camera. Anyways, he was the father of many of Jeff Rapps' past F1 Devils. Jeff estimates his age at 4-5 yrs old based on the size when he arrived. As you can see, he has some old battle scars. There's the light spot on one side where he grew new scales, some ray damage that never fully came back. However, none of this bothers me as he has great personality and is beautiful.

imo the true rd is a rare fish and if you buy your midas from a lfs as a midas theres a good chance thats what it is.... not a midevil.... well at least in the uk.... maybe haha!

me too, good clean banter!-)

Thanks for the compliments on my Devil Justarn! He is indeed a legit F1 male

The fact of the matter is that midevil is no way an insult (as a matter of fact it seems to be becoming a species in itself). People are beginning to accept the fact that if the fish is bought without wild provenance which may indeed be midas or devil but without proof there's no way of knowing exactly what you have due to how closely these fish are related and how similarly they look. I have nothing against someone calling their fish what they want, but when we start talking about breeding and then distributing fry to people proper identification is the name of the game. I dont want to buy a juvie parachromis (all look similar @1") as a dovii and two months later i have a jag. Same goes for amphs, I dont want to get a fish labeled as a midas when in all reality it may be a mix of several species even though it may resemble a midas. Its all about proper representation in the hobby and responsibly distributing fish as what they are. I will not breed my male rd with a fish that looks to be a devil and sell as red devils. I will order from rapps and sell fry as true devils with 100% certainty and people will get what they asked for.

I usually cant tell them apart. The young devils with the huge lips look obvious to me but outside of that I cant tell. Here is a pic of my F1 midas pair. Just got these from rapps a few weeks ago. (This was the pair on his stock list). I understand them to be bred from his midas breeders from nic. Are they pure? I cant tell as I mentioned. I wanted them since it was about as sure as I could be without harvesting them myself or a dna fish test which unless your a scientist is silly. I wanted Midas over RD because I thought Midas would be slightly less aggressive.
